    Newham Hospital cares for one of the most diverse populations in England and patients are admitted to the 12 bedded critical care with a range of illnesses.

    Working with the Senior Management Team and supervised by the Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Critical Care at the Royal London Hospital the post holder will develop a service at Newham that is responsive to the needs of the unit, staff, and local population.

    They will link in with local statutory services, rehabilitation pathways and psychological services using national guidance and evidence bases as well as patient feedback to provide a service that supports patients, relatives, and staff.

    Duties will include delivering direct and indirect psychological interventions, contributing to multi-disciplinary team assessment and treatment planning, providing input to Intensive Care Follow up MDT outpatient follow-up clinics, psychoeducation, teaching and contributing to staff wellbeing initiatives (linking with the Barts Health Staff Psychological Support Services).

    The post holder will have the opportunity to develop and promote psychological research and participate in joint audit and research with other clinical staff to evaluate the services and will be responsible for drawing together national and local resources to support patients and staff.

    Registered as a Practioner Psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council
    Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the BPS and HCPC or British Psychological Society Statement of Equivalence
    Completion of further post qualification specialist relevant training including supervision of trainee clinical psychologists

    Pre or Post doctoral qualification in one or more additional areas of psychological practice relevant to ICU

    Substantial amount of experience of working as a qualified Practitioner Psychologist, including relevant experience in a clinical health setting, either during training or since qualification
    Experience of working in a physical health setting, providing highly specialist health psychology assessment and treatment through 1:1 and group interventions
    Experience of teaching and training other professionals and/or professional and clinical supervision
    Experience of the range of mental health and/or physical health care settings in the NHS, from acute to community

    Experience in an acute healthcare setting, including close physical proximity to service-users who have recently been exposed to life-threatening levels of injury or illness.

    Experience of providing consultation including reflective practice support to multi-disciplinary professionals such as doctors, nurses and allied health professionals
    Experience of working with patients with multiple challenges (e.g. physical, social and psychological) of a long term nature

    Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.

    Must be capable of autonomous and independent practice necessitating the adoption of responsibility for own work and interventions, and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies
    Ability to contain, assess and mediate in situations with clients where they may be distressed and/or at risk to themselves and others

    Ability to communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals and colleagues
    Clinical expertise in at least one area of clinical practice rlelevant to work in Critical Care, e.g. trauma, acquired disability, disabilities, family and relationship difficulties, neuropsychological changes
    Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
    Computer literacy skills, including the use of electronic records, virtual meetings, databases, word processing, presentation and statistical packages
    Knowledge of the working structure of NHS organisations and social care
    Ability to travel between different sites within the Trust and in the community for clinics, meetings, and other work-related responsibilities if required

    Knowledge of psychology of health, illness and health care experiences and processes
    Well-developed knowledge of theory and practice of at least two specialised relevant psychological therapies
    Knowledge and experience of legislation in relation to people with mental health and hysical health conditions and its implications for critical care

    Must be capable of autonomous and independent practice necessitating the adoption of responsibility for own work and interventions, and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies
