    Job summary

    This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a well established multi-disciplinary team working with patients with ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Long Covid. As a service we are based at Kirkley Mill Health Centre in Lowestoft, Suffolk but currently see patients from all of Norfolk and Suffolk in a variety of clinic locations and also on a domiciliary basis when appropriate. The role will be primarily remote working with the opportunity to work at one of our clinic sites of which there are 5 across Norfolk and Suffolk.

    An important part of the role is to provide a specialist resource/ education offering expert guidance and information to other Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy staff and health and social care professionals.

    Depending on the location of the successful applicant this post could be based in one of our clinic locations but we could also offer remote working.

    Main duties of the job

    You will be delivering a full range of specialist Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy interventions including activity management, graded activity, energy conservation, relaxation skills and advice regarding school/ work to both individuals and groups. You will be providing a service to both adults and children.

    An important part of the role is to provide a specialist resource/ education offering expert guidance and information to other Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy staff and health and social care professionals.

    The team of 9 consists of GPwSI's, Occupational Therapists and a Physiotherapist who cover all of Norfolk and Suffolk. We are a friendly, enthusiastic and supportive team who despite the distance in clinics are in regular contact with each other, sharing ideas, and working collaboratively.

    Job responsibilities

    Clinical

  • To ensure a high standard of clinical care for thepatients under your management and to monitor the standard of the clinical careprovided by more junior staff.
  • To carry out assessment to identify problems andtreatment plan for each patient. To implement and review treatment plansensuring that each patient has an individually tailored plan to meet theirassessed needs, involving them in the plan wherever possible. This mayinclude specialist patients requiring more skilled intervention.
  • To independently plan and carry out assessments inpatients own home and to provide advice to basic grades.
  • To accept clinical responsibility for a designatedcaseload of patients and to organise this efficiently and effectively withregard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  • In co-ordination with the Specialist PractitionerOccupational Therapist, or the Deputy Director of Adult Services, to suggestoptions to cover staff shortages and to take on additional cases, prioritisingown caseload.
  • To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teachingand instruction to relatives, carers and other professional, to promoteunderstanding of the aims of Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy and to ensure aconsistent approach to patient care.
  • Under the leadership of the Specialist PractitionerOccupational Therapist or the Deputy Director of Adult Services, to train,supervise and performance manage junior staff, support staff and students.
  • To communication and liaise effectively with othermembers of the multi-professional team about patient issues in order tofacilitate a team approach to patient care.
  • To communicate effectively with patients and carers tomaximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding ofcondition. Communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanationand gaining informed consent will be used with a wide variety ofpatients. Barriers to effective communication will regularly be evident, loss of hearing, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia,pain and fear. Some patients may lack the capacity to consent totreatment.
  • Professional

  • To maintain own clinical professional development(CPD) by keeping abreast of any new trends and developments and incorporatethem as necessary into your work and to be an active member of the in-servicetraining programme by the attendance and presentation at staff meetings,tutorials, training sessions, external courses and reflective practice.
  • To communicate effectively and work collaborativelywith medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure delivery of aco-ordinated multidisciplinary service. This will include caseconferences and discharge planning.
  • Independently identify objectives for personaldevelopment which are then discussed and agreed with the SpecialistPractitioner Occupational Therapist in CFS/ME or Deputy Director of AdultServices. To participate in the Trust Personal Development Programme(PDP).
  • Undertake the measurement and evaluation of your workand current practices through the use of EBP, audit and outcome measures,either individually or with more senior therapists.
  • Organisational

  • Responsible for a designated area of work, as agreedwith the Specialist Practitioner Occupational Therapist in CFS/ME or the DeputyDirector of Adult Services.
  • Plan and organise this efficiently and effectivelywith regard to patient management and use of time.
  • Provide quarterly reports on area of work and makerecommendations for change.
  • Decide priorities for own work area and ensure thatthese remain in accordance with those of the speciality and department as awhole
  • Responsible for ensuring the effective selection anduse of all treatment resources available both in the department, wards and inpatients own homes.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation in linewith legal and departmental requirements and communicate assessment andtreatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports andletters
  • Be actively involved in the collection of appropriatedata and statistics for the use of the department.
  • Be aware of the Health and Safety aspects of your workand implement any policies which may be required to improve the safety of yourwork area, including the prompt recording and reporting of accidents to senorstaff and ensuring that equipment used is safe
  • To comply with the organisational and departmentalpolicies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating asappropriate.
