    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech & Language Therapist within the Enfield Integrated Learning Disabilities Service (ILDS). This post is based in a supportive integrated health and social care team, offering opportunities to collaborate with a range of professionals, including Social Workers, Psychologists, Community Nurses, Employment Support staff, Occupational Therapists, Art Therapists and Physiotherapists.

    ILDS is a community-based service, working with people aged 18+ who have Learning Disabilities. The successful candidate will join a friendly SLT team, working alongside highly experienced SLTs and a Therapies Assistant, who will be able to provide support. The post holder will take on a mixed caseload covering both communication and dysphagia needs.     Main duties of the job

    The main duties of the job are:

  • To manage a defined caseload using evidence based, person-centred principles working collaboratively as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To deliver clinical input to delegated caseload, working flexibly and creatively.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions for adults with Learning Disabilities who have additional health needs in relation to communication and dysphagia (within clinical competency level).
  • To support Assistants and SLT students working in the relevant environment.
  • To liaise with MDT professionals and other services/agencies ensuring the health and wellbeing needs of clients are met.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the Therapies Service.
  • To participate in the development of training initiatives provided by the Speech and Language Team to clients, family, carers and others.

    Job responsibilities

    The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • To assess, diagnose and develop intervention plans for service users within the relevant context including those with: profound learning disabilities; additional sensory and/or physical disability; mental health diagnosis and/or challenging behaviour. .
  • To have knowledge and understanding of the application of alternative and augmentative communication.
  • To facilitate group work with service users, where clinically appropriate.
  • To assess, diagnose and develop treatment plans for service users presenting with dysphagia within clinical competency level.
  • To participate in videofluoroscopy assessments of swallowing as required for service users.
  • To be responsible for SLCN assessment, differential diagnosis, formulation of intervention plans, writing assessment reports, providing appropriate intervention, evaluating outcomes and reviewing and discharging individual service users.
  • To be responsible for managing own time appropriately in order to carry out clinical related administrative duties, relevant to the caseload and operation of the service.
  • To be responsible for managing a defined caseload in the context of the service/team caseload, with ongoing evaluation of clinical effectiveness alongside senior staff, and decision-making in relation to complex case management.
  • To work closely with parents, carers and significant others regarding individual service users and demonstrate practical procedures when necessary.
  • To work with and be available to other Speech and Language Therapists, Assistants and MDT colleagues for support and joint consultation regarding clinical practice as required.
  • To comply with the data and statistical needs of the service, responding in a timely and accurate manner.
  • To participate in new developments in information technology (IT) as related to the needs of the service.
  • To maintain a safe working environment in liaison with the Speech and Language Therapists and Team Manager in accordance with health and safety standards.

    Education and Qualifications

    Essential

  • Current HCPC registration
  • Professional qualification in SLT
  • RCSLT membership
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Desirable

  • Training in learning disabilities, mental health/challenging behaviour and physical/sensory disabilities
  • Post-basic dysphagia training or equivalent in-house training.
  • Member of a professional body/special interest group
  • Other Requirements

  • Willing to work flexibly.
  • Able to travel for work purposes (car/bike/public transport)
  • Experience and Knowledge

    Essential

  • Experience of working in learning disabilities/physical disabilities
  • Specialist knowledge and application of communication assessment & intervention approaches for PWLD.
  • Knowledge and application of Government legislation relevant PWLD.
  • Understanding of SLT outcome measures
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice and its contribution to practice governance
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management
  • Knowledge of performance review policy and procedure
  • Understanding of Health and Safety at work
  • Collaborative work with other professionals
  • Participation in research projects and audit

  • Experience in delivering care to service users with Dysphagia presentation
