    Job summary

    An opportunity has arisen in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for a fixed term (9 month maternity cover) Band 8A principal clinical scientist role at WTE in the blood sciences lab. The individual must have extensive experience in clinical biochemistry with desirable experience in verification and validation (V&V) of both assays and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) to support major projects. In addition they should have FRCPath part 1 and be working towards FRCPath part 2.

    Main duties of the job

    You will be required to be HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist and to show that you are dynamic and highly motivated with a proven, high level of scientific skill and expertise. Good communication, team working and supervisory skills are also essential, as is significant experience in team and service management in a diagnostic setting. You will be responsible for managing the areas of quality and referral tests. You will also be extensively involved in the ongoing V&V of all assays (internal and referral) as well as a new LIMS with an important role in script review and end-to-end testing. In addition to your daily work you would be expected to support the Duty Biochemist rota which includes participation in weekend working.

    1. To assist the Lead Clinician in providing a comprehensive scientific service (analytical and interpretative) by the Department to nationally accepted standards.

    2. To deliver a broad range of complex, specialised and non-routine scientific work requiring skilled performance with a high level of individual responsibility.

    3. To provide clinical and scientific advice to clinicians regarding biochemical investigations and their interpretation.

    4. To deputise for the Lead Clinician as required.

    5. To undertake research and development projects.

    6. To plan clinical service provision.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Honours degree in relevant science.
  • MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent.
  • OR PhD or portfolio of publications.
  • OR assessed equivalent knowledge and expertise within specialty of clinical biochemistry.
  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Desirable

  • Relevant PhD. MRCPath part 1.
  • Alevel Maths and/or statistics.

  • To have completed a formal post graduate training programme approved as appropriate for registration together with supervised in service experience totalling 4 years.
  • OR to have undertaken alternative training and supervised in service experience totalling 6 years as appropriate for registration.
  • Substantial years experience in a higher Specialist Trainee or Substantive Registered Clinical Scientist post.
  • Experience of CPA accreditation.
  • Expertise in information technology including creation of databases and spreadsheets.
  • Experience of supervising/ taking responsibility for a specialized area of work within the laboratory.
  • Experience of research and development and audit.
  • Thorough knowledge of human biochemistry and chemistry including metabolic processes, physiology, pharmacology and drug interference.
  • Good knowledge of analytical methods quality assurance and problem solving.
  • Clear insight into mathematical aspects of test interpretation sensitivity, specificity, DR, FPR, predictive values.
