    Job summary

    University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is recruiting to 2 x Consultant posts, within the Haematology Department. The Consultants will primarily cover lymphoma, with a general haematology clinic. The posts will be based at Heartlands Hospital, but successful candidates will be expected to provide multi-site cover.

    The successful applicants will join a team of 34 Consultant Haematologists to deliver an integrated UHB Clinical Haematology Service. UHB Haematology Service delivers specialist Haematology care across Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull and Good Hope Hospitals. Specialist services are delivered across the West Midlands region, including Level 3 and Level 4 stem cell transplants, CAR-T Cell Therapy, Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) cancer care, apheresis, Comprehensive Haemophilia Centre, a specialist integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service and a national recognised academic and research programme.

    Specialist inpatient care is delivered at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB) with a dedicated Young Persons Unit for TYA care and inpatient care is also delivered across the Heartlands and Good Hope hospitals.

    Main duties of the job

    The Haematology Service compromises of bespoke chemotherapy day-case and laboratory Haematology facilities across the acute hospital sites of Birmingham: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and non-acute Solihull Hospital (SH). There is a network of outpatient clinics, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) led services, and Acute Oncology Service (AOS) provision at all sites. The service co-locates clinical and research staff from the NHS and University of Birmingham.

    Applicants must have full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice, hold MRCP and FRC Path or equivalents and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining their CCT at the time of the interview. Applicants would ideally have experience of original scientific research (have a higher research degree, MD/ PhD) and teaching experience.

    Job responsibilities

    Clinical

    The appointees should be experienced in the management of patients with haematological malignancies, with a specific interest in Lymphoma. The candidates will be expected to undertake independent outpatient clinics, triage advice and referral requests, provide on-call and inpatient rota cover, contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings and support service development. The successful candidates will be encouraged to develop disease specific areas of interest within the service, working alongside the current Lymphoma Teams, to provide safe patient care.

    In keeping with the department's ambition as a teaching hospital, the appointees will have the opportunity to engage in research and clinical trials. There will also be the opportunity to collaborate with Researchers within the University of Birmingham (UoB), the Cancer Research Clinical Trials Unit and the Institute for Translational Medicine.

    There will also be a weekly session dedicated to Laboratory Haematology, including reporting of blood films. In line with the Trusts dedication to clinical training and development, there will be opportunity to supervise training grade doctors.

    On-call

    The successful candidates will be expected to participate in one of the departments attending/on-call rotas.

    For the ward attending commitments, the appointees will be expected to provide reciprocal cover for periods of leave.

    *Experience in the management of patients with general haematological disorders and haematological malignancies.

    *Specialist interest in lymphoma.

    *Knowledge of the processes and function of clinical governance.
