    This interesting and varied role will enable you to further develop your skills and knowledge in caring for babies, children , young people and their families. You will have opportunity to enhance/extend your leadership skills, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team an supporting colleagues and students. You will have a level of autonomy relevant to your role and will be responsible for co-ordinating a clinic area and medical day-case environment for all allergy patients , with support from the Allergy Team.

    You must possess excellent communication skills, be well organised and able to respond to the various demands of the role. A training and development programme is offered with competencies to achieve. Although some level of Allergy training in food challenges and skin prick testing is desirable. Experience of Immunotherapy is preferable.

    Main duties of the job The main duties of the allergy staff nurse role would be to assist in all Allergy Team activity 3 days per week with some flexibility. The role would include, skin prick testing, food challenges, immunotherapy,drug challenges, education and teaching. The successful candidate would support the clinicians in an outpatient setting and in the medical day case unit on site at Alderhey hospital. About us Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care to over 275,000 children and young people each year. In addition to the hospital site located in the West Derby area of Liverpool, Alder Hey has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients' homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Alder Park building in the nearby borough of Sefton.

    We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We're also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    ALLERGY STAFF NURSE

    TITLE: Allergy Staff Nurse

    JOB GRADE: Band 5

    HOURS: 26.6 hours (0.7 wte)

    RESPONSIBLE TO: Allergy Nursing Manager

    ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: RSCN

    RN Child

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: ENB 998/ Or Equivalent teaching qualification

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Experience as a student/staff nurse working in a paediatric setting.

    AIMS OF THE POST :

    This is largely an outpatient and medical day case ward based role, the aim of the post is
    • To provide nursing care, advice and support to children and their families within the allergy service primarily during allergy clinics in OPD and on the medical day case ward
    • To provide support to the Allergists, Pediatricians and Nursing Staff who work within the Allergy Service
    • To help deliver clinical services for allergy including undertaking skin prick testing, assisting with food and drug challenges and the administration of immunotherapy - both sub cutaneous and sub lingual
    • To be responsible for the skin prick testing solutions in OPD, ensuring that all stock is in date
    • To assist undertaking research and audit to support the development of the specialty.
    • To contribute toward the development of the service, through guidance and support of the specialist allergy team.
    CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Provide specialist nursing support and advice to children and families who attend the allergy clinics
    • Teaching and support of parent/carer in the administration of rescue medication including the use of adrenaline auto injector devices (AAIs)
    • Provide care and support for all children who attend the medical day care unit to undergo food & /or drug challenge
    • Assist with the coordination of the provision of routine treatments/diagnostics for allergy
    • Effectively communicate with colleagues within the hospital and community, ensuring a team approach to care
    • Actively participate in the development of care pathway, patient information and treatment protocols which reflect and endorse latest research findings.
    • Adhere to the Health and Social Care act 2008,to promote the reduction of hospital acquired infection.
    EDUCATION AND TRAINING
    • Provide education and training for patients and their families in order that they can fulfill the daily activities of living.
    • Update personal knowledge and ability by attending and participating in appropriate and relevant seminars, study days and conferences.
    • Provide mentoring and assessment to all students allocated to OPD or the medical day care unit.
    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    • Participate in and practice an appropriate model of clinical supervision and reflective practice to meet personal needs.
    • To continue to network and forge professional links regionally and nationally
    RESEARCH
    • Actively participate in research related to clinical practice in the field of allergy.
    • Contribute to research based nursing practice, standards, procedures and policies.
    • Assist in the dissemination of information gained from research.
    QUALITY ASSURANCE WITHIN CLINICAL GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK
    • Help co-ordinate the investigative process of users views of the service and ensure that any deficiencies of the service are identified and acted on.
    • Participate in quality monitoring in conjunction with the Trusts Clinical Audit Department and against national standards.
    • Assist in the evaluation of effectiveness of care both in hospital and community.
    • Contribute towards the development and implementation of clinical pathways working in partnership with the Trusts clinical pathway facilitator and the specialist teams.
    • To work as an integral part of the allergy team.
    • To act up for the Band 6 Associate Allergy Nurse in his/her absence.
