Senior Naval Architect - London, United Kingdom - Shell

    Default job background
    Description
    Where you fit in

The Naval Architecture team within Shipping & Maritime, Technology provides specialist technical advice and assurance to floating projects across Shell. Projects include classical oil & gas projects across upstream floating assets as well as shipping, but also include significant support to new areas including new energies, renewables, and carbon capture projects.

    What's the role?
The role will be responsible for providing Naval Architectural advice, input and assurance to fleet operations, construction, and conversion projects to a broad range of Shell projects.

The responsibilities of the role include:
    • Participation in project teams for new construction and conversions, including the preparation of outline specifications, technical evaluation of tenders, negotiation with short listed bidders, plan approval, design discussions with builder, attendance and witness at factory acceptance tests, commissioning, and trials.
    • Effective liaison with personnel from professional bodies, shipyard managers, Shell Shipping fleet management operation units and Shell Group discipline engineers.
    • Follow policies and interpret legislative requirements.
    • Keep abreast of industry developments and recognise potential for economic implementation of innovative ideas as a means of increasing operational safety or reducing costs.
    • Ensure that maintenance and repair of all ships and systems is commensurate with the highest possible quality, realistic cost, and potential period out of service.
    • Participate in technical discussions with manufacturers regarding design, testing and operation of equipment.
    • The Naval Architect will also be expected to provide casualty response within a multi-discipline team. Training will be provided in specialised software and response system.
    What we need from you?

Along with your degree in Naval Architecture or a similar discipline, we hope to see the following in your CV:
    • Experience in tanker, deepwater FPSO, LNG carrier and / or other gas carrier design including design review and plan approval.
    • Experience of working in a shipyard environment as part of the shipyard's design or construction team or as a representative of the buyer or classification society. The position requires a sound technical knowledge of naval architecture with a bias on structural design and sea-going performance of ships and offshore assets.
    • Comprehensive understanding of relevant Classification Society Rules and Design Engineering Practices.
    • Knowledge of materials science and metallurgy.
    • Ability to analyse and develop proposals and solutions to a wide range of technical and operational problems autonomously.
    • A team player with the necessary communication (oral and written) skills to interface with other disciplines and the ability to produce written reports of a high quality in the English language.
    • Maintain a contemporary knowledge base within own area of expertise.
If you don't see yourself fully reflected in every job requirement listed on the posting above, we still encourage you to reach out and apply. Research has shown that not everyone often applies when they do not feel 100% qualified. We are committed to creating a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse company and we strongly encourage applicants of all genders, ages, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, sexual orientation, and life experiences to apply. We look forward to receiving your application.

    Flexible working

We are keen to support flexible working arrangements, subject to local regulations and legislative frameworks. If this is of interest to you, please describe in your application the type of flexible working arrangements for which you would like to be considered (e.g., part-time, job share).
