Position Summary

| This is a critical position in Library service, responsible for assisting the study and research of faculty, staff, and students by obtaining resources not available onsite from other institutions or commercial document suppliers.

Skills, Characteristics Required for Position

| 1. Strong service-orientation; ability to communicate with, and support people on, all levels from students (undergraduate and graduate) to faculty to administrators.
2. Respect for the importance of the academic research process, reflected in conscientious attention to the needs of patrons.
3. Proficiency in using standard software (e.g., Microsoft Office); especially comfortable with learning new software; somewhat tech-savvy.
4. Ability to prioritize and manage a constantly changing workload and to handle frequent interruptions from both internal and external patrons.
5. Ability to work under a daily deadline with speed, timeliness, and accuracy.
6. Ability to work independently, making sound decisions with minimal supervision.
7. Ability to also be a team player and to collaborate with other departments internal to the library as well as other libraries nationwide.
8. Ability to clearly and effectively communicate, both in oral and written forms, in a timely manner.
9. Supervisory and training skills are a plus.
10. Exhibit consistent and reliable attendance.

Special Working Conditions

Must be able to lift heavy books and packages and be able to push a heavily-loaded book cart. Job can involve retrieving volumes from tops of tall shelving or bottom shelves, requiring being able to get on a step stool or down on the floor. Extensive keyboarding at the computer is required.

Primary Duties

1. Verify and order books, articles, and media resources for our patrons using a variety of databases.

2. Process incoming requests from institutions worldwide for materials held by our library and pack them for physical shipment or scan them for electronic delivery.

3. Use various systems, including ILLiad, 2 UPS systems, Odyssey, OCLC WorldShare, Alma, and other specialized software.

4. Train and supervise student workers in Interlibrary Loan borrowing and lending procedures.

5. Monitor copyright compliance for all journal articles and book excerpts requested by our patrons.

6. Maintain Interlibrary Loan statistics on a daily basis and, using Excel spreadsheets to extract various statistics, create various monthly and annual reports.

7. Prepare detailed annual statistical reports of all Interlibrary Loan transactions.

8. Investigate technological issues and problems, in collaboration with vendors and campus IT staff.

9. Keep up to date on developments in Interlibrary Loan in academic libraries, e.g., reading about and/or attending workshops, seminars, and conferences on Interlibrary Loan.

10. Prepare claims for lost items.

11. Exhibit consistent and reliable attendance.

Secondary Duties

1. Train and supervise ILL /Technical Processing Assistant in duties #1 and #2 above as backup.

2. Create (or collaborate with campus partners to install) library displays.

3. Serve as a member of Murray Library's Event, Display, and Marketing Committee.

4. Work with the Public Services Librarian to manage Mosaic, the institutional repository of Messiah's scholarship.

5. Serve as back-up supervisor for Circulation Department, library light programing, and signage creation/lamination.

6. Pack and ship library materials to Messiah's online students.

7. Oversee mail delivery and retrieval through Campus Store.

8. In conjunction with the Public Services Librarian, maintain the building's appearance in June and July, including seeing that study surfaces are cleared regularly; attending to the disposition of lost, abandoned, or unattended items; and ensuring that patron-facing areas are orderly and clean.
