How it works: Domain Authority

At Squirrels&Bears we believe in simplicity and we like to provide clear answers to your questions. In our #howitworks series we focus on simple explanations of various aspects of small business, highlighting the basic facts, what works and what doesn’t. And we hope to make your life a little easier.

The basics

  • Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages
  • To calculate websites’ domain authority, Moz accounts for over 40 factors, like root domains and total number of inbound links
  • To measure your domain authority, you can use MozBar, a free Chrome extension
  • A DA score ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank calculated by evaluating multiple factors, including linking root domains and the number of total links, into a single DA score
  • Free SEO tools like SEMrush Backlink Checker and Moz’s Link Explorer can help you measure your link profile’s health

Do

  • Monitor your link profile’s health
  • Create compelling content to attract organic backlinks from other websites in your industry
  • Earn high-quality inbound links from websites and pages with high authority
  • Update your website regularly
  • Focus on both, your on-page and off-page SEO
  • Use short sections and subheadings to make your posts easy to digest and SEO friendly
  • Include visual content such as videos, infographics, and images
  • Give your images ALT and title text containing relevant keywords
  • Use title tags and meta descriptions to help search engines to find your site
  • Include simple and clear navigation

Don’t

  • Buy paid links
  • Use it as the only indicator of your site’s quality
