Director - Centre for Global Governance and Security - London, United Kingdom - Chatham House

    Default job background
    £100,000 - £120,000
    Description

    Description

Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is an independent policy institute based in London. Our mission is to help build a sustainably secure, prosperous, and just world through improvement in international relations.

We have an outstanding opportunity for an established and inspiring leader to increase the depth and reach of our work in an area that is central to Chatham House's mission. The Director - an established expert in the field of global governance and security - will lead the newly formed Centre for Global Governance and Security which brings together four existing programmes (International Security, International Law, Health Security, and Digital Governance). The aim of the Centre is to amplify the already extensive work that Chatham House conducts on global governance and security, at a moment when international rules and institutions are being questioned and reimagined, particularly by countries which want more say in a future order.

The Centre will focus our already extensive links with policy-makers and researchers around the globe as we carry out independent analysis, make timely policy recommendations and convene discussions about the way forward. To be successful in the role, you must be a leading authority, able to offer clear intellectual framing and structuring of work, and an experienced, supportive leader and colleague. It is likely that you will have a specialisation in an aspect of international security, but you may also have worked extensively on global governance.

We are an equal opportunity employer, we value diversity and do not discriminate on the basis of protected characteristics. We encourage applications from all backgrounds. If there is anything we can do to improve your experience or support you, please get in touch at .

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategy

    • Advance the Centre's intellectual direction and coherence, making a clear plan for its work as a combined unit with constituent programmes that supports the House's mission and direction.
    • Clearly communicate that strategy to teams in the Centre and line manage their leaders, helping them achieve intellectual and budgetary targets.
    • Build and deliver a fundraising strategy for the Centre, driving unrestricted funding where possible, ensuring the balance of income generation, impact and cost of delivery.
    • Support fundraising across all of Chatham House beyond the unrestricted. Help maximise Chatham House income overall.
    • Inspire and create new ways of working, drive efficiencies and generate new ideas across the House.
    • Drive forward our ambitious EDI strategy.
    • Act as an ambassador and elevate Chatham House and the Centre's profile.

    Delivery

    • Take ownership of the quality of research in the Centre, building on existing high standards.
    • Represent Chatham House in external meetings and as an ambassador for the institute, raising its profile in the UK and globally.
    • Take overall responsibility for the Centre, its people and budget.
    • Develop and secure research and core funding in collaboration with colleagues.
    • Prepare funding applications, in collaboration with other Chatham House departments as appropriate.
    • Monitor and report to funders along with relevant team members on research and project delivery.
    • Ensure that the institute and its staff (including auxiliary staff and Associate Fellows) comply with our policies on research quality, communications, and professional conduct.
    • Monitor Centre performance and share reports with the senior management team and the Research Committee of Chatham House's Council.
    • Work with the COO and Director, Fundraising and Partnerships to pursue untapped fundraising opportunities including restricted income.

    People

    • Lead staff in line with our mission, values and competencies, communicating and setting an example of what "good looks like".
    • Influence a positive working culture for colleagues, ensuring Chatham House standards of behaviours are shared and followed.
    • Establish productive positive relationships across the institute.
    • Expand our engagement with diverse partners, support the growth of our funding network, and play a key role in developing new projects.
    • Mentor and coach direct and indirect reports, establishing an inclusive and collaborative culture.
    • Drive collaboration between research programmes and non-research departments, delivering a "One Chatham House Approach" to all work.
