    Description

    We are looking for an experienced and motivated haemodialysis nurse with the appropriate qualifications to join our well-established renal dialysis teams as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (band 8a) on a full-time basis.


    This role has been developed to work alongside and support the nursing and medical teams caring for patients receiving dialysis.

    The Sussex Kidney Unit has a dialysis population of approximately 480 haemodialysis patients, whilst also looking after 60 patients on peritoneal dialysis and 35 patients on home haemodialysis.

    Approximately 230 patients dialyse at the main dialysis unit in Brighton with the rest of the dialysis population receive dialysis at nurse led satellite units which are closer to their homes.


    The post-holder will be based at Royal Sussex County Hospital and provide consultancy and service development support on-site and will visit one of the dialysis satellite units weekly.

    The satellite units are located at Bexhill, Polegate, Crawley and Worthing. A car driver/owner is essential (business miles refunded).

    The shift pattern would be a 9-day fortnight.
    Patients and their families receiving dialysis have complex care needs, often complicated by the presence of other conditions.

    The Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Dialysis will be an integral member of the renal management team supporting the service in the delivery of key performance targets.

    They will be accountable for the provision of effective nursing care and proactive improvements to patient experience, service organisation and treatment outcomes in haemodialysis.

    This includes supporting home dialysis and vascular access.


    The post requires at least 50% clinical component of direct patient care and a combination of professional consultancy, education and training, service development, research, and audit.

    The post holder will be working with patients receiving or in need of dialysis treatment and undertaking activities to:

    ~ Ensure patients receive dialysis treatment that is safe, competent, and clinically sound for their needs and co-morbidities.

    ~ Ensure patients and their loved ones have choices that support quality of life holistically, with consideration for their lifestyle, travel needs, transplant listing and advance care planning.

    ~ Review and change treatment plans including dialysis prescriptions and

    ~ Refer and follow-up multi-disciplinary review of patient care plans such as renal counsellor/ doctor/ dietician/ community services.


    Due to the dimensions of the role and the clinical judgement required for best place, best care, it requires an individual who is an Independent Prescriber and has undertaken Physical Assessment training.


    Maintaining long-term quality of life on dialysis is a complex multi-professional goal, which calls on patients to change socio-economic habits, lifestyle patterns and adhere to treatment.

    This requires highly developed communication and negotiation skills, in addition to strong working knowledge and skills in renal replacement therapy and dialysis access.


    The post holder will work closely as a team with the lead consultant for each dialysis department and members of the multi-disciplinary team.

    The post holder will develop relationships with other hospitals including doctors, allied healthcare professionals (AHPs), GPs, community nurses, counsellors, hospices and social care to implement care management plans and devise pathways of care.

    They will also give effective education to support patients to make informed choices in renal replacement therapy and dialysis withdrawal.

    Physical assessment of adults or equivalent experience or willing to undertake.
