    Full-time (35 hours per week)

    The Department of Mathematics wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor to strengthen and complement the expertise of the Maxwell Institute and Heriot Watt's School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

    We welcome applications from all areas of mathematics and are particularly interested in appointing a candidate with a strong track record in knowledge exchange who actively engages with other research disciplines, industry, or government.

    Focus areas are mathematical biology and ecology, energy, health care and themes aligned with our Global Research Institutes .

    On the teaching side, the successful candidate will contribute to the standard teaching of the department, but also to the development of new programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

    Lead, carry out and publish internationally recognised research in mathematics;
    Supervise PhD students and actively pursue research funding through the submission of high-quality grant proposals;
    Contribute to the success of the Maxwell Institute and its activities, such as MACS-MIGS, GlaMS and future Centres for Doctoral Training;
    Develop and deliver innovative teaching in mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and work successfully in global teaching teams;
    Contribute to and develop the department's degree programmes in mathematics;

    Be responsible to the Head of Department for performing the activities listed above in a way that will maintain and enhance the School's reputation for excellence.

    Education, Qualifications and Experience

    To be considered for the role the candidate must have a PhD in mathematics or the mathematical sciences and a strong research track record at international level, demonstrated through publications, citations, external invitations and research funding.

    They must also have the relevant experience or potential to be able to successfully engage with our undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics teaching programmes, including the supervision of PhD students.

    The department has a strong collaborative ethos, and the successful candidate will have the aspiration to develop our world-class research activity and the drive and commitment to contribute to and develop our teaching programme.

    PhD in mathematics or the mathematical sciences.
    Skills to develop and teach a range of lecture courses in mathematics, as well as supervise MSc dissertations.
    Skills to supervise PhD students.
    Track record of successful supervision of PhD students and/or PDRAs.
    Track record of successful and innovative teaching, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level

    The Department of Mathematics forms part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a joint research institute bringing together the mathematical research activities at Heriot-Watt University and at the University of Edinburgh.

    All our PhD students are part of the Maxwell Institute Graduate School (MIGS) - an internationally pre-eminent centre for postgraduate training and research in the mathematical sciences that offers an environment that is able to attract and foster the very best mathematical talent from around the world.

    Around 45-50 funded PhD students join MIGS each year, a proportion of which are part of MAC-MIGS, an EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training, and a smaller proportion affiliated to GlaMS, a PhD training centre in Algebra, Mathematical Physics, Geometry and Topology run in collaboration with the University of Glasgow.

    The Department of Mathematics at Heriot Watt University is also a co-founder of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS).

    Its vibrant events programme attracts leading mathematical scientists from the UK and internationally - connecting mathematical communities across the world and greatly enhancing the mathematical environment in Edinburgh.
