    Description

    An exciting opportunity has come up within the East and South East London (ESEL) Pathology Network, for an enthusiastic Specialist Blood Transfusion Practitioner who shares our vision of a high-quality transfusion service.

    We invite applications from candidates with suitably qualified backgrounds, both clinical and laboratory.


    The appointee will assist the Lead Transfusion Practitioner, and other members of the Blood Transfusion management team, in providing a comprehensive, cost effective, and high-quality Blood Transfusion service to the Trust.


    The successful candidate will be based at Whipps Cross University Hospital, with the support of a Lead Transfusion Practitioner and 6 other Transfusion Practitioners (at full establishment), across the partnership.

    The successful appointee will represent Blood Transfusion at may be required to attend external meetings, and contribute to service improvement initiatives, as well as facilitating delivery of the current service provision across the Partnership

    The successful candidate will work with the Hospital Transfusion Committee to ensure the appropriate use of blood, blood components, and alternatives to transfusion.

    The post holder will be providing a link between the Transfusion Laboratory and the clinical interface and will be delivering training and competency assessment packages for the Transfusion process to any Trust employee involved in the transfusion process.

    You will become a champion of best practice ensuring the Transfusion processes meet the Blood Safety & quality legislation and other regulatory bodies.


    The successful candidate will be provided training on investigation of clinical Transfusion errors adverse events, adverse reactions, root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective and preventative actions to improve safety and quality.


    The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

    The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.


    The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

    Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services Immunology Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Immunophenotyping Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

    Biomedical Science or equivalent Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council or Nursing & Midwifery Council
    Experience of teaching, supervising and training
    Current clinical or laboratory knowledge of Blood Transfusion
    Knowledge of audit and quality programmes
    Quality management systems
    Good understanding of Health & Safety Legislation
    Good computer knowledge and skills: Word, Excel and PowerPoint
