    Trainee Reporter - London, United Kingdom - Law Business Research Limited

    Default job background
    Description

    Trainee Reporter (Early Careers Editorial Scheme)

    Department: Editorial & Content

    Employment Type: Full Time

    Location: London

    Description

    Law Business Research (LBR) is offering aspiring young journalists and writers the opportunity to join our early career trainee reporter scheme.

    LBR delivers must-have intelligence to leading law firms and companies when they need it through a combination of time-sensitive insight, proprietary data and analytics, expert research and sophisticated tools, across a range of specialist platforms.

    We want to find and train committed reporters and writers who can break stories and generate unmissable analysis about important business issues around the world. If you are successful in our selection process, you will join one of our platforms in a full-time, permanent role.

    You'll get the opportunity to write news, analysis and other content, make your own contacts and generate long-form features.

    Our newsroom has a track record of generating agenda-leading content including:
    • Investigating why an ongoing bribery probe by Indian authorities has dragged on for more than a decade, with a British man held in custody for five years;
    • Tracking a money-laundering and scam scheme that targeted trademark applicants, contributing to a change in US government policy;
    • Reporting a Swiss court convicting a British lawyer for participating in a fake Kuwaiti arbitration.

    We spot opportunities to generate stories from courts, data, policy changes, and relationships with lawyers, policymakers and more. All members of the editorial team have opportunities to travel internationally. Many of our senior team started and trained here, which demonstrates the supportive environment we offer; other colleagues have moved on to jobs at leading newspapers, B2B publishers, and other roles.

    LBR is a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we welcome applications from different backgrounds. We recognise the importance of diverse perspectives, and strongly believe that having a variety of voices on our team makes our content better. Our ambition is to have more diversity in our newsroom. We thus pride ourselves on a fair and unbiased, inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Candidates will be assessed through writing tests – which are reviewed on an anonymous basis – and face-to-face interviews with senior members of the editorial team.

    Candidates with a qualification in journalism such as an NCTJ or journalism degree or post-graduate qualification, are preferred, and some academic or practical legal experience can be useful. But we will consider all applicants with the ability to demonstrate an instinct for news and an ability to write clearly and concisely.

    Why LBR?

    An amazing market position, enviable growth, collaboration and wonderful people are just some of the reasons to further your career with Law Business Research. Our culture is shaped by our core values that promote equality, agility, and respect in everything we do.

    Law Business Research has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 Inspiring Workplaces Awards. We're proud of our inclusive and inspiring culture here at LBR and we remain committed to creating a positive workplace for all our employees. We are happy to share that we have partnered with Business Disability Forum to help us on our journey to becoming a more inclusive employer and achieving Level 2 Disability Confident Accreditation. Business Disability Forum work with partners, businesses like ours, the government, and disabled people to improve the life experience of disabled employees and consumers, by removing barriers to inclusion.

    Through this partnership we'll have access to expert advice, events and practical resources that we can share with our teams to help us become more disability inclusive and better support our current and future employees. Watch out for further updates.'

    We also take our place in this world of ours very seriously and engage in a wide variety of charitable and community based initiatives. We work extensively with Swawou School in Sierra Leone, which we established to provide education for 120 girls, and on an ongoing basis we underwrite the school's costs.

    'We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer and are committed to ensuring that all candidates are given the same opportunity to succeed regardless of their sex, gender identity/expression or reassignment, sexual orientation, marital status, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion, age or disability.'

    Skills, knowledge and expertise

    Our newsroom has a track record of generating agenda-leading content including:

    • Reporting the activities of a 'fixer' whose contacts with the head of the UK Serious Fraud Office derailed an international corruption trial
    • Tracking a money-laundering and scam scheme that targeted trademark applicants, contributing to a change in US government policy
    • Reporting that a prominent Paris-based arbitration lawyer was suspended for creating a "sexualised climate" at his law firm, with a court subsequently refusing to overturn the suspension.

    Skills Knowledge and Expertise

    We do not expect you to have any prior legal knowledge or any familiarity with the areas we cover – which include international white-collar crime, competition law, intellectual property, distressed finance and much more. But we expect you to have a nose for a story and an ability to get your head around complex topics. You should also have an international mindset and be ready to learn quickly.

    Benefits

    Our people are our most valuable asset, as such, we offer a wide range of benefits to help ensure that all are supported:

    Start of employment:
