    Join the South West Coastal Monitoring team based at the University of Plymouth to help monitor our coast around the whole of southwest England We are looking for two coastal process scientists to work primarily on our coastal assets programme.

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • An Honours Degree or equivalent in Marine Science, Marine Geography, Civil or Maritime Engineering, Oceanography or similar.
    • Excellent level of competency in researching and analysing coastal process data.
    • IT skills, including GIS (Geographic Information System), particularly in respect to coastal processes and management.
    • The ability to undertake independent research and produce detailed analytical reports together with advice and recommendations for coastal management authorities.
    • The ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external colleagues.
    • Excellent knowledge of coastal processes and how this impacts local communities.
    • Knowledge of coastal management practices.
    • The level of fitness necessary to undertake coastal asset surveys involving carrying equipment and walking significant distances.

    You might have:

    • GIS proficiency, particularly ArcGIS or QGIS.
    • Experience of working with coastal assets, perhaps even asset inspection.
    • Surveying experience using tools of the trade such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), laser scanning or a UAV (uncrewed aerial vehicle, or drone).

    Our Assets Team:

    The assets team is an integral part of the main South West Coastal Monitoring (SWCM) team, with a focus on running and delivering the Assets Programme. This programme involves identifying, digitising, and inspecting coastal assets in the South West which perform a crucial role protecting coastal communities against flood and erosion risks. The aim is to create a comprehensive database encompassing both manmade and natural coastal assets which serve a Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) role along the South West coastline of England.

    By summer 2024, we anticipate having a complete spatial representation of all assets in the region, facilitating effective risk management and decision-making amongst the FCERM community. SWCM will conduct and oversee routine asset inspections, prioritising assets based on risk and level of protection, with assets inspected at least once every four years. Training will be provided to ensure inspectors adhere to national standards set by the Environment Agency. Day-to-day activities within the Assets Programme involve managing the asset database, conducting field inspections, ensuring data quality, and collaborating with local authorities or contractors contributing to asset data collection.
