Clinical Fellow in Robotic Surgery - Leeds, United Kingdom - Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

    Default job background
    Description
We are delighted to announce the further recruitment to our highly competitive General Surgery Junior Clinical Fellow programme.

After the successful delivery of this programme over the last 3 years specifically designed to develop trainees ability to progress into training programmes, we are looking to appoint the next cohort of full time Junior Clinical Fellows (JCFs) to start in August 2024 on an initial 12-month contract.

Applicants are expected to have a major interest in a career in General Surgery. MRCS or equivalent is not essential but desirable and basic clinical surgical skills (FY2 or equivalent) should be demonstrated.

We would expect the successful applicant to be able to perform at the level expected of a Day 1 Core Surgical Trainee.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK.

These posts combine emergency surgery on call exposure, elective activity in a base specialty and allotted time for pursuing secondary interests including academia, management/leadership and surgical education with a view to developing a rounded portfolio for subsequent applications to CT1 and ST3 posts as applicable.

The new posts will contribute to the SHO level emergency general surgery rota on a 1:4.5 rota frequency.

The unit is training-focused and successful applicants will be given access to regular laparoscopic simulation sessions and core level training lists as part of their rotation.

Abdominal Medicine and Surgery Clinical Service Unit (CSU) is the largest and most complex CSU at LTHT, comprising both specialist and general abdominal surgery ranging from renal and liver transplant, to complex pancreatic surgery and upper GI, colorectal and urological surgery.

The team in Leeds were some of the early adopters of the robotic surgical programme and have an appetite for innovation and research.

The department is committed to helping those wishing to build competitive portfolios ahead of surgical applications at either core training or higher surgical training level and engagement in the units activities is encouraged.

We have a proven track record of converting our fellow posts to trainee rolls and can adapt the jobs accordingly to individual needs.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles.

As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed.

We are seeking to appoint new full time junior clinical fellows to join the existing cohort of core trainees and foundation year doctors.

These posts combine emergency surgery on call exposure, elective activity in a base speciality and allotted time for pursuing secondary interests, academia, management/leadership and surgical education.

The roles are focussed on delivering high quality surgical training at core surgery level whilst at the same time optimising individual CVs and applications ahead of Core Surgery or Higher Surgery applications processes.

Applicants with interests in General Surgery including EGS, Upper GI, Colorectal, Endocrine, Breast and Hepatobiliary Surgery are welcomed.

Aligned with the original Improving Surgical Training Gold Standard framework, we have successfully launched a new simulation programme delivering laparoscopic accreditation in the form of ALSGBI LAPASS, have SHO, junior registrar level focussed training lists running throughout the week and are committed as a unit to robust educational and clinical supervision and the development of individual research, teaching and leadership skills.

The applicant is expected to have a major interest in a career in General Surgery.

MRCS or equivalent is not essential but desirable and basic clinical skills equivalent to core training level should be demonstrated.

The successful applicant should be able to perform at the level expected of at least a core surgical trainee.
Clinical experience in a base specialty in abdominal surgery placement at St James University Hospital (~75%). Base specialties available include EGS, Upper GI, Colorectal, Endocrine, Breast and Hepatobiliary Surgery.

Applicants will be supervised by appointed college tutors and one of the EGS consultant body will support where necessary in developing criteria to enhance applicants eligibility for successful transition to the next stage of the surgical training pathway.

Elective commitments may involve attendance at major and minor surgery, outpatient clinics, ward rounds, teaching and a contribution to the Trusts Clinical Governance Programme.

Elective duties will be at the level of a CT1-2 and on call duties will be at the level of a Core Trainee.

These are not Deanery (Local Education and Training) approved training posts but engagement in the training process and ISCP assessment is encouraged to benchmark against deanery trainee colleagues.
