    Description

    We are collaborating with a prominent client in the global Aerospace and Aviation industry who is seeking a new team member to take on the role of providing Technical Leadership for the Safety Management System and overseeing a team of approximately 20 experienced individuals.

    This opportunity is ideal for someone with extensive expertise in Safety Management across various areas, who thrives in a team environment driven by a strong commitment to continuous improvement in a dynamic business setting.

    The preferred background would be in Defence (Air), however, we are open to considering candidates from other backgrounds with exceptional Safety Management experience.

    The responsibilities will include enhancing the technical skills of the team members and providing mentorship within the team.

    This role offers flexibility in terms of location, with options such as Bristol, Yeovil, Frimley, Gosport, or Basingstoke.

    The Role:

    We are seeking an individual with passion and drive to assume this position of Technical Safety leadership, overseeing Safety Management System planning, execution, and management across the organization for a range of aviation and non-aviation products and services. These include maintenance, design, engineering support, software, and training solutions.

    You will collaborate closely with the SMS core team leads and the deployed SMS teams in programs to ensure the maintenance of high standards in technical outputs. Your role will involve supervising products such as safety investigations, complex risk analysis documents, risk assessments, bowties, software heatmaps, trending data, training designs on core skills, and fostering a Just Culture.

    You will assist the Senior Manager in representing the SMS team at senior leadership levels within the company and across the broader international group.

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead Safety Management System planning and operations
    • Supervise the ongoing development of the Safety Assurance Strategy, Safety metrics/Intelligence Dashboard, and the continuous improvement plan
    • Act as the Technical Lead Engineer for Safety Management Systems
    • Review and oversee risk analysis documents
    • Supervise safety investigations
    • Act as the focal point for risk escalation, stakeholder review, and briefing key leaders
    • Support the Safety Manager in planning and facilitating the Safety Review Board, including:
    • Developing Safety Review Board presentation material and presenting to the Leadership team

    Competencies:

    Prior experience in a Safety Management leadership role within a commercial or defense organization

    • Domain Experience working in an engineering, maintenance, or air environment
    • Extensive experience briefing senior leadership teams on safety matters
    • Experience leading and facilitating effective Safety Action Groups and Safety Review Boards
    • Formal Safety Management System training
    • Detailed knowledge of civil and/or defense safety and SMS regulations, standards, and legislation
    • Training in Safety Risk management and experience presenting safety risk information at a senior level
    • Significant experience in risk management, assessing, and analyzing risks
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a track record of successful interaction across multidisciplinary teams
    • The role involves significant interaction with UK MoD customers, suppliers, and internal interfaces, requiring a diplomatic yet assertive individual
    • Experience in using or implementing BowTie Enterprise or Centrik
    • Experience as an advanced user in safety reporting and risk management tools
