    Job overview

    A 12 month locum consultant post has become available in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR). This role is for maternity leave cover. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team. Part-time/less than full time applications are invited.

    The post will include both obstetrics and gynaecology but with only gynaecology on call.

    Main duties of the job

    Day time obstetric commitments would include antenatal clinic, Caesarean section operating and labour ward sessions.

    Day time gynaecology commitments would include a gynaecology clinic, benign gynaecology theatre list with gynaecology hot week on a 1 in 12 rota. The job plan includes an alternative week theatre list for benign gynaecology surgical work.

    Emergency (out of hour) commitments covers gynaecology (currently a 1 in 10 rota but under review). An out of hours obstetric commitment can be negotiated. Out of hours work is split with separate consultants on call for obstetrics or gynaecology.

    Gynaecology consultants provide emergency and elective assistance for the obstetric team to support complex obstetric surgery.

    LTHTR is a teaching hospital serving a local population of 450,000 across Greater Preston, Chorley and South Ribble. The Trust has approximately 4,700 births annually and a level three neonatal unit.

    In gynaecology we provide services in benign gynaecology, early pregnancy, endometriosis, urogynaecology, ambulatory, menopause, paediatric, endocrine disorders, vulval conditions and termination of pregnancy. We are an accredited endometriosis centre. We also provide tertiary gynaecological oncology services for Lancashire and South Cumbria with a specialist team of gynaecology oncologists.

    The Trust also delivers regional services in neurosciences (neurosurgery and neurology), plastic surgery, renal medicine, vascular surgery, interventional radiology and hosts the regional trauma centre.

    Preston is one of the four bases for Manchester university medical students. We provide academic and pastoral support to over 300 medical students in their clinical years 3, 4 and 5.

    We have three well equipped education centres to support undergraduate and postgraduate training. A number of our team run courses at these sites or have leading positions within the education department (internally & externally). This is welcomed and any additional training supported.

    There is an active and thriving research team giving research opportunities within the NIHR badged on-site Lancashire Clinical Research Facility and involvement in research is actively sought from all the consultants.

    Essential

    Essential criteria

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e MRCOG or equivalent
  • Benign Abdominal ATSM or equivalent
  • Evidence of MDT meetings and leading clinical decisions
  • Ability to deal with all common obstetric and gynaecological emergency presentations
  • Teaching Experience (undergraduate and postgraduate)
  • Evidence of Clinical Leadership
  • Attendance on management or leadership course
  • Evidence of commitment to audit and quality improvement projects
  • Evidence of involvement in gynaecology governance/governance meetings
  • Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
  • ATSM (or equivalent) in Advanced Labour Ward Practice
  • Desirable criteria
