    Job overview

    The post holder will work in collaboration with the named midwife and other safeguarding professionals within the safeguarding team to support activities that ensure the Trust meets its responsibilities outlined and in accordance with the Children Act (1989, 2004) and Working Together to Safeguard Children

    The post holder will work with the safeguarding team to ensure that the Trust maintains optimum standards including the update of safeguarding policies in line with local and statutory national guidance. The post holder will be expected to provide professional advice and support to health professionals across the PAH NHS Trust on matters relating to safeguarding Pregnant people, Children/Young People babies and unborn babies, working with partner agencies to ensure robust, timely communication and effective practice to safeguard.

    The post holder will be expected to support the planning, facilitation and evaluation of a robust training programme that is consistent with the Intercollegiate Document. Safeguarding Children and Young People, Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff and supports the requirements of the workforce at PAH NHS Trust

    The post holder will have a key role in providing reflective safeguarding supervision for employees at PAH NHS Trust as set out within the Trust Safeguarding Supervision Policy.

    Main duties of the job

    • Maintain knowledge and expertise on National Policy in relation to maternity safeguarding and provide advice and support to all staff.
    • Be aware of and apply where possible, the recommendations of the Confidential Enquiries, the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (2004), the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Baby Friendly Initiative
    • Demonstrate overt professional leadership and maternity safeguarding expertise and foster a culture where all staff can develop their own expertise and confidence and feel valued.
    • Establish good working relationships and work collaboratively with other agencies including Social Care and the Police.
    • Liaise with Named/safeguarding Midwives at other maternity units locally and nationally, Children's Social Care, GP's and health visitors to ensure effective communication and information sharing regarding maternity cases and maternity safeguarding processes.
    • Ensure effective communication on all aspects of the Maternity Safeguarding Programme, including all changes and new initiatives and an effective learning environment for both students and qualified staff.
    • Ensure effective multidisciplinary working relationships with the maternity unit staff, allied groups within the trust and public and voluntary sectors acting in a manner which promotes midwifery in a positive light.

    Person specification Education and qualification

    • Registered Midwife
    • Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
    • United Kingdom recognised Degree in a healthcare profession
    • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
    • Safeguarding supervision training
    • Teaching Mentoring Qualification
    • Evidence of recent level 3/4 safeguarding children/Young people training
    • Working towards a Master's Degree in Safeguarding

    Experience

    • 3 years' experience as a Registered Midwife
    • Experience of safeguarding within existing role
    • Experience of working in the community

    Skills and Knowledge

    • Experience and knowledge in safeguarding
    • Maintain clinical Midwifery skills
    • Good presentation skills – verbal and written
    • Experience of conducting audit
