We have Band 5 Special School Nurse vacancies within our City-Wide Service and would welcome applications from enthusiastic committed children's nurses or learning disability nurse with proven clinical experience and who have excellent communication skills and are able to manage their time effectively.
An understanding of the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) and/or additional health problems is essential.
The successful candidate will be based within the special schools in Birmingham and must be able to travel during the working day.

To assess care needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care
To carry out prescribed nursing interventions as per the care plan under the direction of the Special School Nurse.
Each care plan will identify:
Monitoring the childs growth and development in line with the Healthy Child Programme.
Safeguarding needs.
The care plan will be made available to sit alongside and complement the childs individual Education Plan (IEP)
To prioritise daily care, responding to emergencies as required
To work with the Special School Nurse to assess the needs of the school age population and promote healthy lifestyles within the Public Health Role of School Nursing
To ensure safe custody and administration of prescribed medication in accordance with Trust and NMC guidelines
To liaise appropriately and effectively with education staff, other agencies and parents/carers to achieve optimum health in school age children and young people
To demonstrate, teach and supervise aspects of nursing care that can be delegated to support staff and education staff
Participate in the prevention, identification and protection of children at risk in accordance with Trust Safeguarding Procedures
To facilitate and attend school medicals and undertake nurse led assessments where relevant
Undertake screening programmes in accordance with Trust Policy
To participate in immunisation sessions to allocated schools when required and assist in sessions at other Special Schools if required
To provide advice to parents, pupils and school staff on preventative measures to limit outbreaks of infectious disease
Observes own personal duty of care to equipment and resources
To work closely with the School Nursing Team, participating in team meetings and supporting objective setting, clinical governance priorities and the overall functioning of the team
To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and maintain up to date professional registration
To participate in clinical and safeguarding supervision
To participate in the education and training of pre and post registration students and the induction of new staff
To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records which comply with Trust Policy
To share information with others, observing Data Protection/Information Sharing Guidelines
To ensure the timely recording and submission of activity data in line with service protocols.
Qualifications / training
Educated to the following level: oRelevant professional qualification - RSCN or RN Child Branch or RNLD
Evidence of continuous professional development
Post registration community experience.
Experience of working with children.
Sound assessment skills and use of nursing process and models as relevant
Sound knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice
Ability to teach others how to carry out clinical care procedures as required
Ability to travel to work and other locations as required.
