    We have an exciting opportunity for a lead Health Care Scientist to develop and deliver the strategy to drive forwards innovation for laboratory haematology.

    Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust operates a network of haematology/blood transfusion laboratories on four sites, utilising a unified IT infrastructure and commonality to testing platforms.

    The directorate works closely with the clinical haematology teams in large tertiary adult and paediatric teams.


    In conjunction with the Clinical Director for laboratory haematology, you will be responsible for the overall operation and development of the haematology service, ensuring that the service is of high quality and that it functions in an efficient and safe manner.

    You will have the responsibility for managing a team to successfully deliver all aspects of laboratory haematology, from motivating staff to maintaining the department's finances, this is a multi-layered role.

    We are looking for a visionary leader with excellent communication skills and developed management skills honed along your career path.

    HCPC registered, you will have significant haematology experience with a good awareness of current issues in the pathology service, health and safety legislation and UKAS standards.

    Working with the Director, Clinical Head of Division and Clinical Director of laboratory haematology the Directorate Manager will be operationally accountable for ensuring the effective management and development of a range of services within the Haematology Directorate covering such areas such as Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Stem Cell, pre-op anaemia clinic, etc.

    The Directorate Manager is responsible for the operational management of all Haematology services within the Division. This involves delivery of a service meeting operational performance targets, strategic objectives and working within financial targets.

    Responsible for all Haematology services delivered as part of a Hub and Spoke arrangement, whether that be services residing within MFT or delivered in partnership or under contracts with neighbouring trusts.


    As a senior manager the post holder will be expected to make a significant contribution to the overall delivery of a quality service and adoption of best practice standards within available income.

    Providing leadership and strategic direction to the Directorate including the interpretation and implementation of policy into operational delivery.


    The post holder will take the lead on specific modernisation and workforce planning issues, which will include development and implementation of projects, working within tight timescales as and when required.

    The Post Holder will work closely with the Director, Clinical Head of Division, Deputy Divisional Director, Clinical Director for Laboratory Haematology Clinical Leads and Laboratory Managers, to achieve the Trusts corporate objectives and will be expected to make a positive contribution to the delivery of health services across the local health community.


    Support the Director to balance the budget for the Division through active and regular monitoring and management of expenditure and by meeting any other Trust financial targets such as for cash releasing efficiency schemes.


    Support the Divisional Director to review the delivery of services seeking to utilise best practice whilst embracing local and national modernisation agenda including regional and nationally commissioned services.


    Will communicate effectively with Healthcare Scientists, Clinicians and other healthcare providers both within and outside of the Trust other Trust Directorates including Estates, ICT, Human Resources, Finance, Payroll, Occupational Health representatives and service personnel from Commercial organisations.


    Support the Division to develop a resource management strategy incorporating workforce planning in line with current and future service issues through leadership and the management of change.


    In conjunction with the Divisional Director, Clinical Director for Laboratory Haematology, Clinical Head of Division, Director of Research and Development and clinicians within the Directorate, ensure research and development is pursued in line with Trust strategy and that any practice is evidence based.

    To ensure that services across the Directorate achieve performance, finance and quality objectives and targets in line with the Trusts performance management arrangements

    HCPC Registration in Biomedical Sciences
    Masters Degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience of Haematology/blood transfusion
    Recognised management qualification or attendance at short courses or relevant management experience

    Post graduate management qualification

    Significant laboratory experience and management of a Haematology laboratory at a senior level
    Understanding of Pathology Quality Assurance metrics in order to measure performance in haematology and blood transfusion
    Understanding of current issues within the Pathology service including pathology modernisation and laboratory networks
    Experience with laboratory computer systems. Evidence of staff appraisal and performance management
    Management of resources with a good track record with change management, efficiency savings and financial recovery plans
    Experience of analysing highly complex data and creating reports from such information
    Understanding of the operation of acute hospital services e.
    Experience of managing haematology hub and spoke laboratories
