    Salary £30K to £42K for the right person, dependent upon experience and seniority

    24 days annual leave plus all public holidays.

    Flexible arrangements are available, to work from home for short periods during each month, after a probationary period is completed satisfactorily

    9 KBW is a long established, well regarded and very busy Criminal, Regulatory and Immigration set.

    Our current workload means that our clerking team are dealing with incoming work of the highest calibre including high profile leading work for both prosecution and defence, working for long experienced, high profile solicitors, representing clients charged with offences ranging from murder to driving offences.

    Our members are on the CPS Advocate Panels, both general and specialist at all levels including Level 4 for the CPS, the RASSO and Extradition Panels, and many of our members deal with regulatory cases where hearings are in regard to complex, sensitive and exceptional allegations.

    Our members have a wealth of experience of both leading and junior work, dealing with the most serious and complex cases, and we are rapidly expanding our junior team and in recent years we have taken on all of our three pupils each year. Those pupils rapidly find themselves in jury trials and we expect our clerking team to provide support and guidance in particular to those at the junior end.

    We continue to be not only the busiest we have ever been in terms of incoming work and the recruitment of new members, but the inflow of work continues to rise rapidly. For this reason, and because of the likelihood of a further increase in membership in the coming months, we need another Practice Manager to join our team, to ensure that we can continue to efficiently manage the level of diary work and accompanying billing.

    We are looking for a Practice Manager who has preferably a minimum of 2 years' experience in the job responsibilities set out below and who is fully conversant with, and confident in, assisting with the management of Chambers diary, and ideally in assisting the Senior Clerk with the practice management of members. However, although experience of billing criminal fees will be an advantage, it is not an essential requirement.

    Some experience of criminal clerking is however essential and regulatory and immigration experience is desirable, but not a requirement.

    Chambers undertakes instructions from Direct Public Access clients and knowledge of this type of work is also desirable, but not essential, as training can be provided through both the Bar Council training courses and by our highly experienced Senior Clerk.

    A basic knowledge of GDPR management is desirable. However all Chambers staff undertake GDPR Certification, once they have been in the role for a certain period of time and it is not therefore essential.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Working with the clerking team on diary management for all members and pupils; booking and managing cases in Criminal, Regulatory, Immigration and Direct Public Access matters.
    • Allocating work to members that is appropriate to their expertise and experience.
    • Liaising with Instructing Solicitors and agencies regarding the allocation of suitable Counsel, both Leading and Junior and where multiple Counsel are required.
    • Assisting the Senior Clerk with the management of member practices. And providing support and guidance to members whenever required.
    • Ensuring that work is allocated in accordance with our Fair Allocation of Work guidelines.
    • Assisting with general fee billing and collection.
    • Deputising for the Senior Clerk, where required, on the Tenancy and Pupillage Committee in dealing with the recruitment of Tenants and Probationary Tenants
    • Marketing Chambers at seminars and through our "OIC Roadshow"
    • Delivering client care of the highest standard.

    Our Requirements

    • Experience of managing and clerking a criminal law diary is essential. Preferably for a period of two years or more, but we will consider a shorter period if the experience is particularly relevant.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • A knowledge of the MLC software system is desirable.
    • The ability to work well within a team.
    • A confident and likeable personality.
    • The ability to work calmly and efficiently in a pressurised fast moving environment.
