    We are a leading manufacturer of a diverse and trusted range of concrete and clay building products used extensively within the construction sector, with instantly recognizable brands such as Thermalite blocks, London Brick, Ecostock, Cradley, Formpave and Jetfloor, Bison Precast.

    Our product range comprises of clay bricks, Thermalite blocks, aggregate blocks, Red Bank chimney, roofing and flue systems, precast concrete and flooring products and Formpave permeable paving.

    Forterra represents exactly what we do and have always done. Our purpose is to manufacture products that are the essential to the nation's construction sector, helping our customers build with ease and confidence. Moreover, we continue to lead our industry in terms of standards and safety.

    We are currently looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our Desford team in the position of Quality Controller.

    The Quality Controller will cover a factory specifically focusing on quality awareness and ensuring a high standard of customer focus is maintained, they will primarily focus on the domain of Quality Control. Reporting to the Central Quality team, they will also play a key role integrating into the Plant/Operations Management.

    The primary objective of the role is to ensure that the final backstop Control process' are maintained mitigating any potential for a quality escape from the site that they oversee. They will work closely with the sites SQCDP process' to foster "A right first-time culture" in the manufacture of finished product. They shall work with the site management to deliver a Zero Tolerance on quality fundamentals and work towards Enhanced Tolerance Manufacturing.

    The role has responsibility for the improvement of Quality Systems, this comprising of Management and Maintenance of the Quality Control plan at each site. They will proactively audit these process' to ensure adherence against the frequency, ownership, and delivery of the customer requirements and core performance characteristics for the bricks produced.

    Your duties would include but not limited to the following;

    Quality Control Leadership:

    • Use plant / brick making experience to understand and improve the preventative process and maintenance requirements for Quality Stability.
    • Attend daily SQCDP meetings and drive site quality improvements and ensure actions are completed in a timely manner to plan.
    • Help facilitate Weekly/ Monthly / Quarterly SQCDP Quality deep dive meetings.
    • Ensure that the Quality Control backstop tests performed at each brick site as defined in the Schedule of Quality Testing are delivered against the frequency required.
    • Support sites with the creation of SOP's, Reaction plans and IMS procedures that formalise control in as per company requirements.
    • Ensure trained operators follow SOP's correctly, & the system is maintained and updated as required.
    • Investigate using basic root cause analysis tools, any significant customer complaints ensuring that containment and countermeasures are put in place.
    • Ensure that test and measuring equipment is fully functional, maintained and meets the calibration requirements as to provide reliable results.
    • Facilitate the use of Quality Abnormality Reports (QAR forms), and ensure any actions are closed in a timely manner to plan.
    • Manage relevant non-conformances using the Intelex database, in consultation with site management.
    • Ensure the processes for dealing with Quarantined products are adopted and actioned in a timely manner.
    • Verify that the site is adhering to the Finished goods stock rotation & preservation procedure.
    • Ensure the site maintains the Critical Quality Point workstations to the correct visual standard.
    • Ensure the site is adhering to the management of change procedure.

    Quality Assurance and Compliance Integration:

    • Maintain good communications with line management and the technical team, escalating issues to them that cannot be overcome at site level.
    • Liaise with the site & the central lab team, to ensure that samples are sent to schedule and any results out of tolerance or adversely trending are actioned as per the report recommendations.
    • Support the development of site control plans.
    • Liaise as appropriate with the central quality auditor ensuring that internal and external audits are suitably supported, and any actions are followed through for resolution.
    • Where required, support the development of Supplier Quality Assurance principles into the sites that they support.

    About You ;

    Education / Qualification

    • Proficient with good knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
    • Proficient in Math and English.
    • Level 3 certificate in Clay Technology
    • Certificated training in quality control or quality management.
    • Proven experience as quality inspector or relevant role
    • Auditing certification or experience
    • Valid driving license.
    • Counterbalance FLT license

    Technical /Interpersonal Skills

    • Brick making or industrial quality control experience - +3 years
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic problem-solving knowledge – i.e., 5-why, root cause analysis, cause, and effect.
    • Investigate causes of quality problems and proposing solutions.
    • Be a team player and help facilitate continuous improvement and change.
    • Work well under pressure.
    • Confidence to challenge, and the persistence and the ability to influence others.
    • Good time management skills and adhering to deadlines.
