    Museum Development Midlands (MDM) is looking for an experienced, proactive museum collections professional to take on the role of Museum Development Collections Officer , supporting the delivery of collections development activity for the Arts Council England (ACE) funded MDM programme, jointly hosted by Leicestershire County Council and Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.

    About the Role

    As Museum Development Collections Officer, you will lead on the development, delivery, promotion and evaluation of a comprehensive training, support and advice programme that meets sector needs. You will coordinate the delivery of the collections management and conservation elements of the data informed MDM Activity Plan, within agreed budgets. Activity is framed around ACE 'Let's Create' strategy Investment Principles and the Museum Accreditation Standard.

    You will develop, deliver, and promote a programme of targeted training workshops, development programmes, advice and support, driving improvement and best practice to accredited museums across the Midlands. You will be responsible for delivering agreed areas of the training yourself, and use assigned budgets to source consultants to support with delivering specialist areas of the programme. You will evaluate delivery, using insights to inform programming.

    With a strong understanding of the issues and priorities facing the museum sector and its collections, you will provide specialist collections management and development advice and signposting to Midlands accredited museums, and those working towards accreditation. You will respond to direct enquiries and provide information through networks and forums.

    You will represent MDM where required at national, regional and local level. You will coordinate agreed regional specialist networks, including the Emergency Response Network.

    You will provide advice on collections management and related Museum Accreditation standards. You will give pre-application advice to museums about targeted MDM collections grants and contribute to the MDM grants panel.

    About Museum Development Midlands

    MDM is funded by Arts Council England (ACE) and delivered in partnership by Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and Leicestershire County Council. MDM builds upon the established track record of both West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) and Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM), with a strong understanding of the museum sector and trusted relationships with local museums and networks. This post will be employed by Leicestershire County Council but will cover the whole Midlands region.

    About You

    To apply for this post, you must demonstrate:

  • Degree level qualification in a relevant professional subject area . museums / heritage, Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area OR substantial relevant experience at the level equivalent to the above qualifications
  • Significant experience of working with museum collections in a range of types and sizes of museums or heritage sites, including collections documentation, care, conservation and management practices.
  • Experience of designing, leading and delivering training directly, both online and in person.
  • The ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders to deliver outcomes, including experience of commissioning or working with specialist heritage consultants and freelancers.
  • Up to date practical and procedural knowledge of current museum sector issues, particularly in the context of collections, knowledge of current and emerging standards/ guidance for collections and a working knowledge of Museum Accreditation and Spectrum Standards.
  • A flexible, resourceful approach, identifying and implementing opportunities and managing and prioritising time effectively.
  • Confident IT skills, especially around online systems, and online workshop delivery.
  • We'd also expect you to share and will ask you to evidence when you have demonstrated them as part of the interview process.
