Location: Milton Park, Oxford

We are Nium: A nano-scientist, an engineer and an entrepreneur. We founded Nium, a nanotechnology company, at Carbon13, the Venture Builder for the Climate Emergency, in the summer 2022 to eliminate greenhouse gases at a massive scale: at least 10,000,000 tonnes CO2e a year by 2030 and exponentially thereafter.

The Role

Are you looking to be at the forefront of having an impact and making a real and tangible change to the climate emergency? We are looking for a Research Scientist, specialising in Materials Science & Lab Management to join the team at Milton Park and Harwell Campus. The role is to work together with the team on catalysis study, materials characterisation and lab management.

Key responsibilities

Apply specialised analytical techniques and catalysis knowledge to analyse Nium materials for heterogeneous catalysis.
Lab facility maintenance and management.
Operation of advanced materials characterisation instruments including (aberration-corrected) STEM together with EDS, EELS and in situ imaging; SEM; TPR, ICP-OES, MP-AES, FTIR, etc.
Image analysis and data analysis.
Maintain and develop experimental standards and procedures.
Design, develop and validate new analytical methods.
To report the results in a timely fashion via both written and verbal communication to ensure that understanding of observations has been received.

You will have:

PhD or Master (with research experience) within the following subjects: Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering.
Expertise in materials science and general knowledge of catalysis.
Experience of lab facility management.
Experience on electron microscopy [aberration-corrected (S)TEM and SEM].
Experience of a wide range of analytical techniques for materials characterisation.
Ability of technical problem solving and adapting relevant roles in the company.
Self-motivated and quality focused on high standard of research data collection and analysis.

Nice to have:

Knowledge of vacuum instrumentation.
Experience of control software development on customised facilities.

We have a patent pending nano-catalyst and scale up technology for ammonia synthesis, currently the most polluting chemical industrial process on our planet. We have access to the best labs in the UK and assembled an experienced international team and we have cutting edge facilities to take our technology to scale.
