    An exciting opportunity has arisen to expand our neonatal sister/charge nurse team to join our outstanding team across Nottingham Neonatal Service.     There has never been a more exciting time to join our neonatal team as we expand our neonatal service. The exciting Maternity and Neonatal Redesign programme is well underway.

    The MNR will create;

    A completely refurbished and expanded neonatal unit at the QMC, providing an additional 21 cots and taking the total cots at the QMC campus to 38

  • Main duties of the job

    We provide care for tertiary level neonatal care for premature babies and their families at Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital, we are the north hub in the East Midlands for neonatal intensive care. We are proud to offer both medical and surgical intensive care for extremely premature and very sick infants, as well as having an integrated outreach team in place to support babies and families once they return home.

    The post holder is required to work as a member of the Neonatal Services nursing team which delivers care on both City and QMC campuses. They will be a member of a team of Band 7 nurses who lead and take managerial, professional and clinical responsibility for the neonatal services nursing team. They will have 24 hours responsibility for the management and delivery of care within the neonatal service across 7 days a week, day and night. They will deputise when requested for the Ward Manager, Critical Care Sister and Quality Sister.

    The post holder must be a current NMC Registered Nurse (child or adult branch) with a recognised neonatal critical care qualification and experience in a neonatal critical care area. In addition they will hold a recognised teaching or mentoring qualification.

    About us

    The post holder will need to have a good team building skills and be able to demonstrate how they motivate and lead. Evidence of clear effective communication skills and experience of change management is essential. He/she will be required to work flexibly as a member of the neonatal team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved.

    As a sister/charge nurse in the Neonatal Service you will provide managerial, professional and clinical leadership, supporting nursing, as well as linking with other healthcare professionals throughout allied services to ensure we provide excellent care for babies and their families.

    Nottingham Neonatal Service as part of the Children's Hospital were recently designated the first Children's Hospital across Europe to be accredited with Pathway to Excellence. Already a Bliss Baby Charter accredited service; this is an exciting time to become a pivotal member of the team as we move onwards with our journey of care excellence.

    Job responsibilities

    Have 24 hour responsibility for managing staff and budgets to ensure the standards and quality of care and the environment in which they are delivered are maintained and improved.

    Ensure high quality, evidencebased care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Matron, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken. Includes developing, implementing and maintaining patient care policies and procedures, clinical guidelines and protocols where appropriate.

    In collaboration with all members of multi-professional team, ensure that the baby and family have a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and redesigning the pathway of care including external agencies and also other hospitals.

    In conjunction with the Appraisal/Individual Performance Review process, undertake training needs analysis for a defined group of staff and share with the Practice Development Nurse for collation annually, to contribute to and inform the Neonatal and Childrens training plan.

    Essential

  • 1st Level Registered Nurse
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Possession of a degree in nursing or healthcare
  • Neonatal Critical Care Course
  • Current NLS provider
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Possession of a teaching and/or mentoring course
  • Successful completion of maths test
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Management/leadership in a neonatal intensive care area
  • Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively
  • Experience in managing staff and providing feedback
  • Experience of risk assessment and management
  • Ability to lead change and lead new ways of working
