    The Cambridgeshire Drug and Alcohol Service (CGL) is recruiting a Consultant Clinical/Counselling Psychologist join the senior leadership team and oversee the delivery of a high-quality Psychology service. The Cambridgeshire service consists of 3 locality teams based in Cambridge, Huntingdon and Wisbech, and a number of specialist teams including Criminal Justice, Family Safeguarding and the Homeless Engagement and Recovery Team (HEaRT).

    Main duties of the job

    The Psychology team consists of the Core service sub-team and HEaRT sub-team. The Core team works county-wide and comprises this Consultant post, an 8a and assistant psychologist. The HEaRT team comprises 8b and band 7 psychologists and covers Cambridge City only. As the Consultant, you will provide leadership, oversight and supervision to the Psychology team around their delivery of a wide range of activities in service of improving the quality of our service users lives and supporting recovery. These activities include training, supervision, consultation, reflective practice, group and 1:1 therapeutic interventions.

    You will also form a valued part of the CGL multidisciplinary team which consists of recovery co-ordinators, nurses, doctors, social workers, peer mentors and volunteers. You will support these colleagues to deliver psychologically informed care through team consultation and reflective practice. You will use your expertise in substance use and mental health to help colleagues make sense of their clients complex difficulties and more effectively support their journey through treatment to recovery. You will also offer clinical supervision and governance around team group psychosocial interventions for substance use difficulties.

    Key Activities:

    To undertake a range of specialist clinical work relating to difficulties associated with drug and alcohol use, recovery, trauma, and other mental health and neuropsychological/developmental challenges.

    Clinical:

    1.Leading the development and delivery of psychological services in allocated sectors of CGL services. Focusing on talking therapy support for people who use substances, staff training and supervision. In addition to clinical management and service management, the post holder provides services in the area of teaching, training, consultancy, staff support, research and service evaluation

    2. Joining the senior clinical management team at the service, supervising and line managing the service talking therapy teams. Supervising Clinical Psychologists at other services and providing national support to the lead consultant psychologists on national psychology service developments. To act as a resource to senior management within CGL on psychological aspects of substance misuse services, research and teaching. To support the Executive Board and CGL clinical executive in the integration and development of policies associated with psychological care, including multidisciplinary team working as appropriate

    deputise for the lead psychologist on national meetings and steering groups, representing the professions of psychology on national service development and governance meetings. To be part of a national group of senior clinical psychologists that Lead on the strategic direction and support the effective delivery of psychological care for people who access CGLs services

    be responsible for holding and managing a clinical caseload and to exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the planning and prioritizing of own workload and the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients, within operational policy. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of complex clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based care plans.

    provide consultation, mentorship, supervision and advice about psychological issues at a high level of professional expertise to other members of the team/service and other professionals working with service users and families across a range of agencies/ settings as appropriate

    provide specialist assessments of clients presenting with cognitive impairment and to be able to adjust psychological interventions to work effectively with people presenting with complex needs due to cognitive impairment and organic disorders.

    7.Leading and supporting research initiatives with the service that seek to improve service user experience.

    8.Supervising and providing mentorship for highly complex clinical work carried out by other staff within the allocated areas and assisting them, where necessary, in making clinical judgements.

    undertake highly complex risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management, including assessments of individuals who are frequently aggressive.

    10. Participate as a member of the Senior Leadership Team at the service in the design and development of a high quality, responsive and accessible service for clients, their carers and families within the service. Including collaboration with service management where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.

    formulate and implement plans for evidence based psychological treatment and/or management of a clients mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems.

    Teaching, training and supervision:

    receive and provide regular clinical supervision. To provide direct clinical and professional supervision to Consultant Lead Clinical Psychologists, Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologists, Specialist Clinical Psychologists, Trainee Clinical Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists within CGL.

    maintain an up to date knowledge of legislation, policy and developments in the provision of services relevant to the CGL.

    participate actively in professional and managerial supervision, ensuring arrangements are maintained, including where necessary, specialist therapeutic supervision appropriate for specialist areas and undertake relevant training aligned with the post holders personal development plan and HCPC and relevant professional bodies guidelines regarding continuing professional development.

    provide clinical placements for trainee psychologists and other psychology students, ensuring that trainees acquire the necessary skills, competencies and experience to contribute effectively to client care and to contribute to the assessment and evaluation of such competencies.

    5.Collaborate with managers, service users, carers and other stakeholders in the development of training and education specific to identified needs.

    ensure HCPC registration is maintained, complying with Continuing Professional Development requirements to maintain registration.

    7.Develop training and educational packages to meet service needs in conjunction with other managers within CGL.

    1. To participate in identifying and implementing the development of a high quality, responsible and accessible service, including advising both service and professional management.

    exercise delegated responsibility for managing the psychological resources available to a team in the form of psychological materials employed in the assessment and treatment of clients.

    exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service area.

    be responsible for contributing psychological knowledge and expertise to policy and service development through participation, where practical, in regional multidisciplinary meetings and special interest groups, working parties etc.

    , develop, monitor and evaluate engagement and outcomes achieved within the service to ensure that clients are given the best and most effective routes in to treatment, sustain their engagement and achieve the outcomes and aims they have identified, enabling them to move on from specialized services and sustain their recovery.

    Person Specification

    Experience

    Essential

  • Post-doctoral / post-qualification training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • HCPC Registered as a practitioner Psychologist.
  • Extensive experience of providing successful clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary mental health provider context.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology.
  • Assessed extensive experience of working as a qualified psychologist, including significant post qualification experience within the Specific Care Group/Service.
  • Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological practice.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for service users psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi disciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of multi-professional management of teams or services within the designated care group.
  • Experience of the successful professional management of qualified and pre-qualified applied psychologists.
  • Extensive experience of providing successful clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary mental health provider context.
  • Significant experience of teaching, training and providing professional/clinical supervision.
  • Desirable

  • Experience of working in a service for alcohol and substance use.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.
  • Knowledge about addictions and mental health issues and the impact of these on individual and family life.
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology [or its equivalent for those trained before 1996 or outside the UK] as approved by the HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Desirable

  • Lived experience of mental health issues.
  • Further training in leadership and management in mental health services
