    Default job background
    Full time, Fixed-Term/Contract
    Description

Are you an adept communicator with a passion for translating intricate concepts into captivating narratives? The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) is seeking an experienced Communications Manager to lead our small, dynamic team. As the Communications Manager, you'll craft compelling stories, magnify the Institute's impact, and thrust scientific breakthroughs into the limelight.

The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) is a national and international visitor research centre running programmes on themes from across the full breadth of the mathematical sciences, with applications in a very wide range of societal, scientific, and technological areas. The Institute attracts leading scientists, both from the UK and from overseas, to interact on research over extended periods. In recent years, the range of activity has expanded commensurate with the Institute's leading role as part of the UK mathematical community's national infrastructure. INI now supports a range of satellite programmes across the UK, and has nurtured new national initiatives such as the National Academy for Mathematical Sciences and the Knowledge Exchange Hub. As part of the INI, the Newton Gateway to Mathematics acts as a knowledge intermediary for the mathematical sciences, reaching out and engaging with the users of mathematics, in industry, business, public sector and other scientific disciplines. Together, the INI and Newton Gateway facilitate world-class research and innovation across the mathematical sciences.

The role involves managing channels, developing content, and engaging with the local, national and international mathematical community. The Communications Manager will work closely with colleagues to effectively communicate the Institute's activities and promote research undertaken by visiting scholars, for example, developing its broadcast activity (podcasts, livestreamed events). Additionally, they will enhance the Institute's broader marketing and communications efforts, engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate will contribute to an evolving communications strategy, elevating the profile and impact of the Institute's scientific activities across diverse audiences. They will work alongside the director, senior management, the Newton Gateway, and external consultants to achieve the strategic goals. Effective communication skills, scientific writing experience, and an understanding of social networking tools are essential for this role.

You will have experience of a broad range of communications disciplines e.g. media, reputation management, stakeholder liaison etc., excellent planning, organisational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. The ability to convey scientific and technical topics to a range of audiences through engaging communication is key. Line management of a Communications Assistant also forms part of the role.
