Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry – Thames ward - London, United Kingdom - Barnet Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust

    Default job background
    Full time
    Description

    Job overview

A generous Recruitment and Retention Premia of £20,000 is applicable to this post (conditions apply). A relocation package of up to £8000 is also available for this post.

The post offered is that of a consultant psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry to work on Thames ward at the Dennis Scott Unit, Edgware Community Hospital, Barnet. The ward is a mixed gender acute psychiatric ward providing assessment and treatment for patients who cannot be safely managed in the community by our community teams or crisis resolution & home treatment teams.

The ward has 20 beds, however there are internal arrangements to cover the two outstanding beds thus the post holder will be responsible for 18 beds. The beds serve patients residing in the London Borough of Barnet, although the ward receives referrals from the other boroughs within the North Central London partnership (Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust). On average there are 4-6 admissions per week to the ward.

This is a well-established substantive consultant post and is full-time for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs): 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). The post is replacement post available as a post holder has taken on a different role within the partnership and is currently being covered by a locum consultant.

    Main duties of the job

    1. To lead the morning ward meeting (Flow meeting) with the ward manager.
    2. To ensure the timely assessment and treatment of patients admitted to the ward.
    3. To hold responsible clinician responsibilities with attendance at and report writing for Mental Health Tribunals and Manager Hearings.
    4. To facilitate access to a range of community orientated services through liaison with community consultants and teams.
    5. To liaise closely with the relevant Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams and crisis houses to facilitate early discharge of patients back into the community.
    6. To liaise effectively with other Trust services and external partner agencies in the best interests of patients.
    7. To promote mental health and independence for all.
    8. To provide clinical and professional leadership in the service.

    Working for our organisation

Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children's community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

Formed in 2001 through the merger of its predecessor organizations, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH-MHT) continues to innovate and develop at a fast pace. We are a large mental health trust in London with an annual budget of £337 million and employing more than 3,300 staff. In the trust cared for more than 126,176 people; approximately 2,800 patients on our wards and over 128,388 service users in the community.

We provide a wide range of local and more specialist mental health services, including helping people with serious mental illness (SMI), personality disorders, drug and alcohol recovery, children's mental health issues, dementia, eating disorders, learning disabilities, ADHD and suicide prevention. The Trust has an overall Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating as 'Good' from 2019 and retained the 'good' rating in 2022. It also runs the North London Forensic Service (NLFS), which the CQC has rated as Outstanding.
