    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated nurse with oncology/chemotherapy/haematology experience to join our Cancer Nursing team at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. We work Monday to Friday.

    This post is for 9 months secondment to cover maternity leave.
    We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated nurse to join our team to provide support, information and advice to our Haematology cancer patients and support these patients throughout their pathway.

    You will be pivotal in the further development of our Haematology Service.

    You will have sound knowledge of oncology/haematology and managing patients through their treatment.

    You will be the key worker for patients diagnosed with haematology cancers, providing a link between patients and health care professionals across all health care settings to improve the patient pathway.

    The successful post holder will give advice and implement patient care in an area which requires specific oncology/ clinical knowledge, skills and experience, so you will have significant post registration experience at Band 6/7 and evidence of post-registration study in oncology/haematology.

    You must also demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a multidisciplinary team. The ability to organise and prioritise your own workload is essential.

    Main duties of the job

    To support our haematology patients at the time of diagnosis and throughout their cancer pathway to ensure a seamless service as is possible for our patients.

    Provide specialist help, advice and support to patients and their families.

    The CNS will work effectively as an autonomous practitioner and as a core member of the multi-disciplinary team, to provide the highest possible standards of care for patients with a haematological cancer.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    To improve care of patients and provide specialist help, advice and support to their families and carers as well as to act as an advocate by providing information which leads to informing patient choice.

    Influence patient care through clinical practice, clinical management, leadership, education, research, audit and professional activities

    Play a key role in the continual development, implementation and evaluation of the Haematology Service locally to improve and maintain standards of patient care and promote a seamless service within a multi-professional framework.

    Education and Qualification

    Essential criteria

  • First level RGN registration
  • Teaching qualification e.g.ENB 998 or extensive experience.
  • Educated to Degree level.
  • Relevant post registration qualifications in oncology / haematology
  • Evidence of recent professional development.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Educated or working towards Masters level.
  • Clinical Examination Module at Level 6/7 or willingness to work towards.
  • Psychological support training at level 2
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • Committed to continual personal and professional development
  • Knowledge

  • Working in the health care sector with staff management experience
  • Up-to-date knowledge of cancer
  • Significant post registration experience in oncology and caring for patients with cancer
  • Understanding of the cancer patient and carer issues and their role in service improvement.
  • Experience of working across a variety of care settings.
  • Evidence of innovation/change management
  • Understanding of the Key worker role
  • NCAG recommendations Acute Oncology Service
  • Personalised care agenda – HNAs, end of treatment summaries, health and wellbeing.

  • Demonstrates advanced clinical skills in managing complex care situations
  • Wide range of experience in providing multi-disciplinary education within the specialist field
  • Experience of undertaking and applying research, audit to deliver the clinical governance agenda
  • Practical experience of participating in change / developing practice, project management
