    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Clinical/Counselling Psychologists to join the highly skilled and energetic Psychosexual Service team .

    These posts, in a specialist service, offers good CPD and career development opportunities, and would be well-suited to candidates looking to master their skills in conducting assessments, delivering individual psychological therapy and take on roles relating to service development, research and teaching in the psychosexual field.

    Newly qualified psychologists eligible for HCPC registration will be considered.

    Main duties of the job

    The role would suit a motivated and committed Counselling/Clinical Psychologist with some skills and experience working with individuals and couples presenting with complex sexual problems.

    Successful candidates would have a proven record of delivering psychological therapy and be competent in at least one therapeutic modality CBT. Some knowledge of psychosexual therapy, sexual dysfunction and issues around gender identity is required.

    Ability to discuss topics related to sex using appropriate language, in a calm and confident manner is expected. An active interest in conducting research in the area of sexual dysfunction and its treatment will be welcomed. A proven record of research skills and conducting high quality research projects is highly desirable

    About us

    Psychosexual Service is an outpatient clinical service, part of the National Service Division, for adults aged 18 and over with no upper age limit. It specialises in treating people with complex and persistent sexual problems. The service offers assessment and treatment for individuals and couples who are experiencing difficulties with their sexual functioning, where the primary cause is psychological, or where the psychosexual problem has developed as a result of physical pathology.

    We have expertise in treating people with a range of sexual dysfunctions and gender-related difficulties.

    Job responsibilities

  • To be responsible for the management and treatment of patients with complex sexual problems using psychological therapy, and manage difficult intimate situations with sensitivity, skill and an understanding of anatomy, physiology and psychology underlying sexual dysfunction.
  • Undertake highly specialised assessments of referrals for psychosexual therapy, under supervision, based upon knowledge, understanding, and the integration of psychotherapeutic concepts and evidence-based practice and the range of treatments available.
  • Undertake specialised risk assessments and risk management with individual patients in line with the principles of psychosexual psychotherapy and provide advice on aspects of risk to other clinicians and services, as necessary.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a strong research culture in order to encourage the critical evaluation of practice, and take part in ongoing research that may lead to publication.
  • Assist in the writing of academic papers, as an aspect of advanced and highly specialist continuing professional development.
  • Work towardsproviding clinical supervision to trainee psychologists or psychotherapists.
  • Assist with planning and delivering teaching and training of pre-and post-qualification psychologists or psychotherapists and specialised training to other professions as required.
  • To work as an autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines and codes of conduct, and guided by principles and policies or procedures of the service, taking responsibility for interpreting policies within defined parameters.

    Training and Qualifications

    Essential

  • Doctorate in Clinical/Counselling Psychology or equivalent
  • To be eligible for registration with HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist
  • Desirable

  • Recognised qualifications and training in psychosexual therapy
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Experience of working as a clinical specialist (including while in training) under supervision
  • Knowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics
  • Experience of working in a core mental health profession with a range of diagnostic, ethnic and sexual minority groups
  • Experience in research, audit and clinical governance
  • Desirable

  • Experience of working with a range of therapeutic models
  • Experience of psychosexual therapy
  • Experience of racial awareness/cultural diversity training
  • Experience of personal therapy
  • Knowledge

    Essential

  • Knowledge of human development, behaviour and psychopathology
  • Knowledge of psychosexual therapy including psychosexual theories, models, medical aspects and role in the NHS
  • Awareness of psychiatric diagnoses and treatments and mental health provision in statutory and voluntary sectors
  • Knowledge of research and statistical methodology
  • Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of providing more than one psychotherapeutic model of treatment

  • Clinical: independently manage caseload of complex patients, work under pressure, maintain empathy and sensitivity

  • Teaching and research: ability to deliver teaching, presentations and write research papers to a high academic standard
