    Job summary

    An exciting Band 6 position has arisen for a highly motivated and forward thinking NMC registrant to join the the Paediatric Practice Education team at ELHT

    You will work within the Practice Education team to support the learning and development needs of the 0-19 team at ELHT, To enhance the acquisition of new skills and knowledge and manage their mandatory training requirements.

    Training is a high priority to us and you will make sure staff feel valued, confident and competent . You will ensure patient safety is optimised by working with the MDT to provide robust up to date evidence based training.

    You will provide assurancesto the nursing management team that training compliance is exemplary , keeping up to date records of training and providing accurate reports.

    You will work with local and national initiatives to ensure Paediatrics at ELHT remain at the forefront of innovative research,practice and development.

    Main duties of the job

  • Act as a point of contact for advice and expertise on training and education.
  • Support the development of education and training by planning and facilitating relevant training to all staff including students on placement.
  • To maintain accurate and up to date training records; producing and presenting reports from this data,
  • Implementing the learning from audits and incidents
  • To reduce clinical risk and promote patient safety through the development of educational programmes, assessment of clinical skills and clinical competencies where appropriate
  • To support the Practice Educator, senior nurses and Matrons in managing under performing staff.
  • Take responsibility for guiding, reviewing and supporting the development of the professional and educational needs of registered nurses across the Paediatric areas
  • In conjunction with Unit Managers, Matrons, Speciality Business Manager and Learning and Development Finance Team monitor educational course requirements, facilitate all necessary planning and negotiation to provide cost-effective and quality training delivery.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and evidence-based guidelines as appropriate
  • Carry out practice-based assessments for staff.
  • Demonstrate compassionate leadership and act as a role model always.
  • You will be supported by the Band 7 Practice Educator lead, being responsible for your own workload and acting autonomously within that role.

    Job responsibilities

    Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures

    Identify training requirementsrelevant to Paediatrics from local audits, national policy, evidence-based practice/guidelines, research .

    Share locally identified development needs with other Practice Educators to identify strategic issues in respect of learning and report these through to appropriate groups. Network with other Paediatric Practice educators locally and regionally to share good practice and supervision. Support the ICB with any service development.

    Support the development of Trust wide processes to identify training needs which will include delivery, assessment and evaluation of learning in practice

    Contribute to the development of others enabling them to apply current knowledge in practice and to develop their clinical skills

    Actively promote the workplace as a learning environment encouraging everyone to learn from each other and from examples of good practice

    Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation

    Comply fully with the Trust Dress Code policy and ensure nursing team comply .

    All patients, visitors, staff and students are welcomed in a manner which promotes a positive image of yourself, the team and Paediatrics

    Facilitate Learning in Practice

    Undertake work activities, which are consistent with legislation, policies and performance

    To maintain an up to date register of mentors for the clinical area; ensuring mentors attend updates as required by liaising with the senior nurses and matrons

    Ensure all areas provide a safe and effective learning environment for all learners

    To support development of staff within the 0-19 team by the direct provision of supervision or coaching and mentoring , including support with Revalidation for registered nurses

    Support staff to develop the required clinical skills to support parents, carers and teachers through teaching and assessment of competencies. Work with the relevant specialist nursing teams to ensure all teaching is up to date and evidence based

    Develop strategies to ensure the timely release of staff to attend training

    Governance

  • To develop strategies in conjunction with the senior nurses, matrons to ensure that staff within the clinical areas attend:
  • Annual mandatory training in line with Trust policy

    Resuscitation training on an annual basis

  • To ensure that all staff within the teams receive locally delivered infection control training as appropriate to their clinical area in line with national and Trust wide guidance, policy and strategy
  • To identify the equipment for which training needs to be provided in line with Medical Devices Agency guidelines and the members of staff requiring this training. To ensure that the training identified is provided in a timely manner and an up to date data base is maintained
  • Identify learning needs of individual members of staff arising from patient safety issues, poor performance, complaints and patient experience and supportively deliver the training required
  • To record locally delivered training and development activity by keeping an up to date accurate data base
  • To work with the Trust Education team to develop training programmes
  • Contribute to investigations as part of the Datix process. To be responsive to incidents ensuring safe and effective care through robust evidence based training which is supportive .
  • To be a key trainer for life support programmes, blood transfusion, IV therapies, medicines management ,medical devices and clinical skills to support Paediatrics.
  • Competency development and assessment within the Trust policies/frameworks and national standards

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical competencies in line with the Trust clinical competency framework and best/evidence-based practiceby ensuring:
  • robust communication mechanisms are in place

    training programmes are available (locally or centrally delivered)

    mechanisms are in place for the assessment of individuals competencies

    Quality

    Develop and maintain the local multi-professional learning environment in line with best practice guidelines

    Contribute to the development of Trust wide policies, procedures and clinical guidelines

    To develop in conjunction with the Nursing Directorate and other Practice Educators, education and development strategies and interventions that support the achievement of the standards laid down within nursing indicators eg RCN guidelines

    To develop and deliver a robust Preceptorship programme for newly qualified RNs

    To develop and deliver induction packages for new members of the team

    Partnership and Collaborative working

  • To contribute to the development of nursing education (pre and post-registration) by providing clinically grounded feedback to local education providers and others
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of education programmes to be provided by others, University, HR, as required
  • To contribute to the workforce modernisation and role redesign agendas by ensuring the identification of education/ development needs and where necessary providing or contributing to the provision of development interventions and clinical competencies

    To liaise with UCLAN in respect of the delegated Service level agreement for their directorate, ensuring that all the students attendances are recorded

  • To network both internally and externally with relevant parties in the interest of developing the work of the clinical education team to ensure it remains current and relevant
  • To maintain continuing professional development and clinical practice by being available to support staff in practice.
  • To attend meetings as appropriate to the role. To deputise for the Practice educator and present in their absence at meetings
  • Maintain registration with the NMC and comply with statutory requirements.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Essential

  • Diploma or degree level entry
  • Substantial post registration nursing experience
  • Evidence of recent clinical competence in Paediatric nursing
  • Evidence of actions taken to optimise learning outcomes and experience of self and others
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to undertake on commencement of post
  • Evidence of recent continuing professional education or development in Paediatrics
  • Desirable

  • Degree Level entry
  • Experience of working at Band 6 within Paediatrics
  • Post registration qualification in topic specific to Paediatrics
  • Teaching/Assessing qualification ( Cert Ed, PGCE, GIC ) NMC recognised
