    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, self-motivated nurse to join the team. This is permanent role (36 hours per week) across Monday to Friday.

    The post holder will be expected to provide clinical expertise and knowledge, demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, treatment and management of the client group. You will monitor and improve standards of care through, supervision of practice, clinical audit, evidence based practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership. You will actively contribute to the clinical governance processes within the service.

    Candidates must be able to travel independently transporting any required equipment in order to facilitate cross site working.

    Main duties of the job

  • Assess patients fitness and understanding of the procedure, provide information leaflet and complete ERCP pathway
  • Minimise on the day cancellations by providing wards with pre procedure advice regarding the care of ERCP patients
  • Ensure patients' blood results are in range prior to the procedure and arrange corrections if not
  • Ensure that the ward teams have a full hand over following the procedure with a clear management plan from the consultant
  • Be a point of contact for the ward and endoscopy teams in case of any concerns with the patient and be able to provide specialist advice and support
  • Act as a resource in the coordination and effective management of the admission and discharge process
  • Participate in the development and evaluation/guidelines/protocols for clinical practice
  • Complete the pre assessment checks at the pre assessment clinic for outpatient ERCP
  • Work with tertiary ERCP teams for patients who require speciality input
  • Attend MDT meetings
  • Provide a follow up service for patients the day following outpatient procedures and again at 30 days
  • Liaise with GPs to reduce hospital readmissions.

    Planning and Organisational Duties

    The post holder will be required to:

  • Assess, plan and implement programmes of evidenced based care for the patient group.
  • Plan and manage own workload in a flexible manner, ensuring needs of patient caseload are met.
  • Ensure that all aspects of patients care and interactions are documented in line with trust policies on trust systems and departmental databases.
  • Participating in meetings if requested by the Matron and senior nursing team.
  • Maintain a peer network of support, information and learning with other specialist nurses both externally and within WWL.
  • Communications and Key Working Relationships

    The post holder will be required to:

  • Support patients and relatives to access relevant information and support, including sign posting for support services within hospital and community services.
  • Alongside relevant teams be responsible in ensuring patients have been contacted around upcoming appointments, providing relevant information and ensuring patients are aware of any follow up if required.
  • Work with the tertiary ERCP/Gastroenterology teams for patients who require specialist input regarding their care.
  • Maintain own and others awareness of relevant research evidence related to practice and work with others in applying this research to current practice as appropriate.
  • Networking with peers internally and externally to ensure ongoing service development.
  • Take part in reflection and learning from practice in order to maintain and develop competence and performance as appropriate

  • Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

    Qualifications

  • 1st Level Registered Nurse
  • Post registration qualification in Gastroenterology or Oncology or willing to work towards
