    Job summary

    This is a new post designed to expand junior doctor staffing on the oncology ward and in the oncology department at James Cook University hospital. You will work alongside 2 FY1, 1FY2 and colleagues on the ward with support from middle grades and the consultant oncologist on call.

    Main duties of the job

    The duties of the post include the day to day care of the patients on ward 14 and involvement with unwell patients within the department who may need admission. Oncology patients are admitted for complications relating to their cancer or anti-cancer treatments. Ward 14 takes direct admissions as well as transfers from other areas of the hospital. There is a daily consultant ward round.

    It is expected that the post holder will rotate with the other IMT Doctors on an acute cover rota. This will involve assessing patients presenting to the CIAB and chemotherapy day will require assessment either for admission, or supportive treatments to allow them to go home. You will be working under supervision, there is a middle grade on call every day 9-5pm and a consultant oncologist on call 24/7.

    About us

    The Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology in JCUH is a major part of the Cancer Centre on Teesside, and is contained within the main hospital with its own reception, registration and records and outpatient facilities. It serves a population of around million people throughout Teesside and the southern part of Durham with overlap into North Yorkshire. Over 4000 new cancer patients are referred for an oncology opinion each year, with an anticipated rate of increase of 2% to 3% per year. Inpatient care is provided on an adjacent dedicated oncology ward of 14 beds with a range of single\isolation rooms. The inpatient ward is covered by four junior doctors, two of whom are either F2 or IMT trainees who spend some time contributing to the acute medical take whilst rotating through oncology. The remaining junior doctors are a GP trainee and a trust grade doctor. Out of hours the ward is covered by the general medical on-call rota and hospital at night system. The Trust is EWTD compliant.

    There is an Acute Oncology Assessment Service operating within the Trust. The trust lead for Acute Oncology is Dr Talal Mansy, supported by two band 7 specialist nurses and a band 4 coordinator. The consultant support for the Acute Oncology Assessment Team is provided by the on-call Oncology Consultant. There is a new SACT Ambulatory Care Bay due to open in 2021.
