    At the same time, we are investing in the Operational Risk Oversight team in the second line of defence. We are increasing the capacity, seniority, and capability of the team to ensure we are able to continue to add customer value by investigating, challenging, and influencing across the Society.

    This role within the Operational Risk Oversight team will be accountable for.

    • providing real-time advice and oversight for payments activity on an end-to-end basis from horizon scanning for regulatory developments, supporting compliance with regulatory change through to oversight of ongoing compliance and operational risk management.
    • providing independent assessment of risk and controls to ensure the Society remains within risk appetite. This is vital to ensure that Nationwide achieves its strategic ambitions, remains compliant and does the right thing for our members.

    You will be expected to work from London or Swindon twice per week.

    What you'll be doing

    The role is exceptionally varied given the breadth of initiatives and stakeholders you will oversight. You will report to the Senior Manager whilst working closely with other members of the Operational Risk Oversight team, and 2nd Line of Defence areas as Payments features in many parts of the Risk Framework taxonomy. As part of this role, you will be responsible for:

    • Working directly with your stakeholders as part of our close and continuous oversight approach, building relationships with key stakeholders within the Payments area and highlighting areas for improvement in risk management and controls aligned to the Nationwide Enterprise Risk Management Framework
    • Scanning the regulatory horizon to identify emerging risks, regulatory change and gain wider industry awareness to provide advice and challenge.
    • Working with colleagues from across the business to support their strategic aims whilst ensuring that these aims are delivered in a safe way that puts our members at the heart of the decision-making process.
    • Managing a portfolio of work and advising business areas on all aspects of payments initiatives (including underpinning technology implementation and change) and how current and new regulation including the Consumer Duty impacts us and our members.
    • Reviewing papers, packs, and proposals to providing effective insight, and presenting opinion at risk and control governance forums/committee as appropriate
    • Develop your technical skills and career, through continuous learning and development, both on an individual basis and through our own Risk Academy.

    About you

    As a minimum you'll have:

    You will need strong technical knowledge and understanding of the payments regulatory and legislative framework, the governing regulators including their remits and their strategic intentions as well as external market developments.

    You will also have a good understanding of regulatory compliance, operational and conduct risk management and oversight helping you to advise the wider business and conduct oversight activity as part of the Nationwide three lines of defence risk management framework. You will have the ability to independently read and interpret financial services regulation, deliver excellent consultancy skills, influence stakeholders, articulate risks and issues and apply a regulatory and operational lens to business strategy.

    • Proven, recent experience of working in a payments regulatory oversight or compliance role within financial services where you have developed regulatory compliance knowledge, advisory and oversight experience (Payment Services regulations, the FCA approach to Payment Services document, the Regulated Technical Standards on Strong Customer Authentication as well as the Consumer Duty).
    • Proven experience of understanding and working with financial services enterprise risk management frameworks, policies and controls in relation to payments related risk identification and management.
    • Proven experience of independent assessment of controls design and effectiveness.
    • The ability to confidently explain technical regulations and influence at senior levels.
    • Effective relationship management skills and experience in engaging and challenging business areas.
    • A flexible approach and presence to lead a portfolio of work and undertake new and varied compliance and oversight risk related analysis and reviews.
