    Job overview

    We are delighted to be in the position to expand our specialist Haemoglobinopathy team and are looking for a band 7 Clinical Nurse specialist to join us for a 1 year fixed term contract.

    Our Haemoglobinopathy CNS/ANP team care for patients across Guy's and St. Thomas's with inherited blood disorders including Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia.

    Applicants should have knowledge and experience with caring for patients with sickle cell disease and a desire to develop skills including the education of staff and patients as well as the delivery of apheresis (red cell exchange transfusion).

    The haemoglobinopathy team are a well-established multidisciplinary team (including specialist consultants, psychologist and nurses, ward & day unit nursing teams, administration teams, midwives, general practitioners, community nurse specialists and other relevant key stake holders). These individuals work closely to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

    We are seeking a highly motivated individual who demonstrates specialist clinical skills and a high level of organisational and communication
    skills. This role would be suitable for a senior nurse with solid experience of acute care who is ready for the next step in their career. The ability to work autonomously is essential.

    Main duties of the job

    Main duties of the role include but are not limited to:

    To develop a shared vision of the service and work with the Multi-disciplinary team, organisation, and external agencies to adhere to
    this.

    • Demonstrate expert knowledge and understanding of Haemoglobinopathy conditions.

    • To support the ward and day-care staff with acutely unwell patients, liaising with the pain team, haematology and paediatric team to
    ensure optimum care of the patient.

    • Be an expert practitioner within the speciality ensuring the provision of high quality evidence based nursing care of patients and their
    families.

    To support and empower adults, children, young people and their families to make informed choices, access services and transition
    from adolescent to adult services appropriately thereby achieving an independent and rewarding adult life.

    • To occasional support with emergency red cell procedures. Full training will be provided and the successful

    • This role involves working on both Guys and St Thomas sites

    • supporting patients throughout their lives from their transition from Children's services to adult services as well as during obstetric care,
    planned surgery and emergency admissions

    This band 7 CNS role will support the two advanced nurse practitioners and 2 existing clinical nurse specialists with the care of patients with sickle cell disease accessing our A&E, inpatient wards, out-patient and day care services.

    Essential criteria

  • BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience

    • Desirable criteria

  • post registration course in haemoglobinopathies
  • communication training

  • Experienced and competent in the management of patients within the speciality
  • Experience of teaching/ assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • Significant post qualification experience of in the community and demonstrable experience of interagency and collaborative working

  • Demonstrates specialist expertise in Haemoglobinopathies underpinned by theory acquired through CPD
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
  • An understanding of audit and research based nursing practice.
  • Sound working knowledge of user involvement in the planning and delivery of care

  • PCA experience
