Anexciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Yorkshiretrainee paediatrician (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership andmanagement to join Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Childrens Hospital asthe Chief Paediatric Registrar for a period of 12 months commencing September2024.

TheChief Paediatric Registrar role builds on the Royal College of Physicians (RCP)programme already running in the Trust. It will provide higher specialtytrainees with the opportunity to develop valuable skills in leadership andmanagement and gives them 40% protected time to put these skills into practiceby developing initiatives that address local challenges.

ChiefRegistrars have a tangible impact on service improvement, workforcetransformation, engagement and morale, and education and training, and work todeliver better outcomes for patients, colleagues and organisations, supportingto build a profile that marks them out as a future clinical leader.

Main duties of the job

TheChief Paediatric Registrars role will include:

Co-chair the Junior Doctor Forum in Leeds Childrens Hospital aiming to improvetrainee morale, training and education.

Work in collaboration with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust ClinicalLeadership Fellows.

Working with the Paediatric Sim Fellows to help establish regular simulationacross the Childrens Hospital.

Provide a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the widertrainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale.

Service improvement, for example redesigning pathways, implementing newtechnology and establishing new services to improve flow and outcomes forpatients.

Improving the quality of clinical and non-clinical education and trainingactivities, and supporting/mentoring other trainees to engage in qualityimprovement.

Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees tomeet service needs and improve morale.

Improving efficiency and reducing waste.

Working across teams and boundaries to engage stakeholders in qualityimprovement and influence change.

About us

TheLeeds Childrens Hospital has an annual budget of £103 million, inpatient bedbase of 286 beds, and delivers 102,000 outpatient appointments and 20,000inpatient and day case episodes. The majority of which is on the Leeds GeneralInfirmary site, however there is a Neonatal unit based on the St JamesHospital site. The Leeds Childrens Hospital employs a total of 116 consultantsproviding general, specialist and supra-regional childrens medical andsurgical services. Inpatient, day case and outpatient services are mainlyprovided at the LGI.

Job responsibilities

LEVELSOF RESPONSIBILITY

Applicationsare open to trainee paediatricians or those who have achieved CCT:

At ST4 or above

Working full time or less-than-full-time

With a national training number

With full GMC registration.

Thisis a fixed-term role for 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme orout of programme (training or experience). Due to the 2 day/week leadershipcommitment, this post will extend the trainees completion of training (CCT)date and this should be discussed with the trainees educational supervisor andtraining programme director.

Thepost holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council(GMC) and hold a licence to practice.

Standardsof Conduct and Behaviour

Youare required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council inGood Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you believe thata doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat tothem. If, after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow theTrusts procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or MedicalDirector in the first instance.

LeaveArrangements

Allleave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy,normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptionalcircumstances.

Training

Thejobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager forhis/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous ProfessionalDevelopment remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatorytraining required for the role.
