    FULL TIME ROLE, BASED AT NURSERY SITE (SOME HOME WORKING PERMITTED)

    Accountable to: Headteacher of The Children's House, Ellie Grunewald

    THE SCHOOL

    The Children's House was set up in 1973 by a group of local parents, originally to provide high-quality early years education in Islington. Our Nursery is in Elmore Street, Islington and caters for children ranging in age from 21⁄2 to 4, whilst the Upper School, a short distance away in King Henry's Walk, Islington currently offers Reception to Year 4 and is expanding to a full prep school in the coming years.

    The school's focus is on families and children, with a strong emphasis on pastoral care. Classes are small, and the school community is warm and friendly, with supportive parents and plenty of opportunities for teachers to get involved in whole school events.

    Learning is individualised, with high teacher child ratios and importance placed on creativity. Whilst we are non-selective, pupils do very well academically and are prepared for the 11+. Whilst all of our classrooms are equipped with Chromebooks, iPads and interactive boards, traditional skills such as reading, handwriting and phonics, are valued

    Responsibilities

    We are looking to appoint a stand alone, Finance Manager to assist the Head and Business Manager in planning and managing the school's financial resources as we expand the school to Year 6.

    In this pivotal role, you will take ownership of the full spectrum of financial matters from management accounting to budgeting and bookkeeping. This is a stand-alone role working in a warm, nurturing, independent school, which is extremely varied.

    The key responsibilities are as follows:

    • Management Accounting

    Preparation of termly management accounts for School Governors including:

    • All accounting entries and reconciliations to prepare management accounts,
    • Variance analysis of income, expenditure, staff numbers and pupil numbers with commentary and explanation of key variances,
    • Balance sheet, cash flows and KPIs.
    • Budgeting

    Preparation of the annual budget including income, expenditure and any capital expenditure in consultation with the Head Teacher, Business Manager and Senior Administrator including:

    • Fee increase proposal,
    • Budgeting of staff salaries.
    • Statutory Accounts and Audit

    Prepare Statutory Accounts and Trustees Report in accordance with legislation.

    Main contact for annual audit. Assist with all audit queries.

    Responsible for all accounting entries using Sage 50 Accounts including:

    • Producing termly fee notes,
    • Reconciliation of Early years funding,
    • Producing regular invoices for After school clubs,
    • Chasing late payment where appropriate,
    • Processing all purchase invoices and generating weekly payment run,
    • Maintaining a fixed asset register and calculating depreciation,
    • Processing all bank transactions and performing regular bank reconciliations,
    • Performing nominal ledger reconciliations including deposits, fees paid in advance and pension account reconciliations.
    • Tax Compliance

    Ensure compliance with UK tax regime and prepare tax filings if required.

    Manage the process of VAT registration when required, and regular VAT reporting.

    • Payroll

    Responsible for managing and running the monthly payroll process using Sage 50 Payroll including:

    • Maintaining employee records in Sage 50 payroll, processing monthly timesheets, liaising with HR Manager and HMRC,
    • Making monthly FPS and EPS submissions,
    • Generating net pay reports for authorisation and payment,
    • Generating pension payments and HMRC payments.

    Work with HR Manager to implement new reward schemes where appropriate.

    • Other

    Prepare termly forecasts, maintaining dynamic scenario planning models.

    Work with HR Manager and Head Teacher preparing annual staff salary reviews.

    Preparation of Salary Survey data.

    Review of "Scorecard" pupil pipeline report.

    Work with School Business Manager and Administrators to ensure all Bank Mandates are correct and up to date.

    Manage and implement the School Investment Policy.

    Review and input into the School's Risk Register.

    Maintain list of members.

    Attend termly Council of Management meeting every term (these meetings take place after school hours during the working week)

    Company Secretary of The Children's House School Limited, ensuring all Companies House filings made on time including change of directors and Confirmation Statement.

    Charity Commission main contact, ensuring all returns made on time including change of Trustees and Annual Return.

    Ensure internal controls are followed and suitable for the organisation. Implement or change controls where appropriate.

    Ensure Finance systems are suitable for purpose, implement new systems as and when necessary.

    Person Specification

    • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with experience in working in a small team (ideally in a stand alone role)
    • Experience of book-keeping,
    • Experience of preparing Statutory Accounts and audit requirements,
    • High level of self-motivation and organisation,
    • Self starter with a pragmatic outlook
    • The ability to communicate at varying levels (with all teaching staff, SLT, School Governors, parents and external agencies),
    • Excellent analytical skills,
    • Experience using Sage 50 Accounts and Sage 50 Payroll,
    • Knowledge of the Charity Sector,
    • Previous experience in the independent education sector.

    Reporting Line

    The School Accountant reports jointly to the Head Teacher and the Council of Management.

    There are no direct reports.

    The role works closely with the Business Manager, HR Manager and both Administrators.

    This role is a term time role which involves up to 2 weeks additional work outside term time to assist with payroll, payments and some financial reconciliation (which can be undertaken from home). With the increase in classes at the school in the next few years, this may move to 3 weeks work.
