    Job overview

    An opportunity has become available to recruit a newly qualified Clinical Physiologist graduate, who is keen to develop, gain skills and experience to work in a busy department undertaking all the modalities of testing which will include EEG, Nerve Conduction studies and Evoked Potentials.

    The Clinical Neurophysiology Department provides a responsive service of Neurophysiological testing for adults and children of all ages as out-patients, as well as an active in-patient service which includes referrals from the adult, liver, paediatrics, neonatal, trauma and Neuro-intensive care units. This would include working off-site at the various associated hospitals and institutions. We also operate a Satellite unit in Kent providing elective neurography studies.

    You will be required to rotate your duties to work at the satellite unit on a frequent basis.

    There is an opportunity for in house training to learn and develop skills in the specialised diagnostic examinations e.g ERG, AFT, NCS, Paediatrics and neonate EEGs, ITU EEG & SSEP's etc

    You should demonstrate good verbal/written and oral communication skills, with competency and fluency of the English language. Overseas applicants must possess IELTS at level 7 or will be expected to reach this level of fluency.

    The candidate must possess either an HNC/NVQ in Physiological Measurement, BSc in Clinical Physiology or other relevant degree (which includes a Neurophysiology diagnostics). Computer literacy would be an advantage.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder is required to work as part of a highly specialised team engaged in the techniques of recording, measuring and monitoring neurophysiological function in patients (neonates, infants and adults) with the aim of identifying disease of the nervous system. This would be undertaking diagnostic investigations, independently in EEG, EPS, NCS,

    The physiologist at this grade would be required to:

    • Manage their own time effectively in order to maximise the day-to-day plan of the workload, as organised by the Technical Manager, on site and off site from the main department.
    • Plan and perform standard routine and non-standard bedside diagnostic examinations on all patients as requested in accordance with set protocol, procedures and International Standards
    • To provide a concise and accurate report of the data recorded in preparation for the Consultant Neurophysiologist final report.
    • To participate in training sessions as part of continued professional development
    • Actively contribute and implement policies and procedures
    • Works collaboratively on a day-to-day basis with others to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    • To be responsible for planning, performing and interpreting a wide range of neurophysiological investigations both routine and non-routine carried out within the departments, as well as portable/bedside recordings, ensuring that high technical and professional standards are maintained at all times.
    • To obtain and optimise collection of patient data throughout the testing period to enable accurate and efficient interpretative analysis of tests. To continually monitor, and take initiative and appropriate action where necessary.
    • To obtain a clinical history and modify the test accordingly.
    • To provide accurate factual reports in a timely manner in accordance with departmental policy.
    • To liaise with senior staff over faults or problems with equipment, databases or software used in any part of the service and ensure that all members of staff are informed.
    • To promote the comfort, well being and dignity of patients being investigated keeping accompanying persons aware, as appropriate, of the test requirements for successful investigation and of the logistics of the subsequent return of the patient to home or ward.
    • To identify patients physical, social and psychological needs in collaboration with ward and departmental based staff.

    Quality

    • To attend Consultants reporting sessions as required and ensure that the technical and clinical input to the session supports the consultant diagnosis and report.
    • To attend Trust and regional audit meetings, and support the ongoing development of audit into Neurophysiology best practice. Also attend regular neurophysiology meetings involving physiologists, clinicians and support staff.
    • To regularly attend educational and scientific meetings, and feedback to other team members.
    • Ensure personal compliance with regards to mandatory, professional, and personal development according to service needs.
    • To maintain quality control procedures as directed by departmental policy including regular machine verification.
    • To develop and maintain unified quality standards for the service across the Trust.
    • To respond to any complaints, inform the business manager and assist in the response to these as required.
    • Where possible, rectify faults detected in equipment and arrange for repairs to be carried out.
    • To liaise with doctors, nursing and ancillary staff to promote the smooth running of the Department and to achieve good communication between all members of the team.
    • To work within agreed policies and protocols of the Trust and professional body.
    • To contribute to the implementation of the Trust and Directorate framework for clinical governance, including performing audits and setting of standards for the speciality and the Trust, thereby monitoring, maintaining and improving a quality service.
    • Ensure safe working practices and a safe environment for the delivery of the service.
    • Undertake responsibility for the efficient and effective use of financial resources.

    Research and Development

    • To actively participate in research, clinical trials and publications undertaken by the Department and collaborate with other departments within the Trust when necessary.
    • To liaise with the service manager and consultant(s) to introduce new technology and methods that will benefit the Department and the Trust.

    Person specification Qualifications

    • BsC Clinical Physiologist or Equivalent degree or qualification (e.g. HNC)
    • HNC in MPPM or equivalent (with Neurophysiology option)

    Experience

    • Broad experience in clinical EEG of at post qualification including non standard procedure..
    • Experience with clinical EPs and/ or video/EEG telemetry, NCS, IP ICU EEG, IOM. SLEEP STUDIES & POLYSOMNOGR APHY
