    Description

Founded in 1899, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a world-leading academic institution globally renowned for its research, postgraduate studies, and continuing education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education, and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

LSHTM plays a critical role in helping the world respond to serious threats to human health. Our teams were on the frontline in DRC in 2019 responding to the world's second largest Ebola epidemic, and we have been instrumental in the COVID-19 pandemic response. We have 3,500 staff conducting research in over 100 countries, and more than 4,000 students — all working with a collective purpose to improve health worldwide. Our outstanding, diverse, and committed staff and students make an impact where it is most needed - deploying research in real time in response to crises, developing innovative programmes for major health threats, or training the next generations of public and global health leaders and researchers. Today, our staff, students and alumni work in government, academia, international agencies, and health services across the world.

Externally, we face a challenging landscape with the geo-political environment, economic climate, and government funding models all impacting the financial sustainability of the UK's higher education sector, and with globalisation, urbanisation and climate change shifting priorities in human health. We can also see opportunities for our School by being at the forefront of tackling the world's greatest issues facing human health, responding to changing skills demands, digital developments, diversifying income streams and more.

We are seeking to appoint to the role of Dean of the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (ITD) to lead the development of existing and emerging areas of excellence in research and education, responding to an era of new challenges for public health. As a member of the LSHTM Executive Team and reporting directly to LSHTM's Director, the Dean will play a major strategic role, incorporating leadership and management at both Faculty and School level and representing and advocating for the Faculty and LSHTM externally.

The Faculty of ITD's vision is to deliver outstanding contributions to reduce the evolving disease burden related to infections and global health inequity. The Faculty is positioned at the interface between laboratory science, clinical medicine and population health, and has close links with colleagues and collaborators in more than 100 countries. The Faculty encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including all laboratory-based work at LSHTM, with research approaches from fundamental biology through clinical research to impact on policy and practice. Around 135 students are studying research degrees.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and lead an academic portfolio of significant strategic importance. We are therefore seeking an inspiring and inclusive leader with sustained academic leadership experience gained at a strategic level in research intensive environments. They will be a leading academic in their discipline and passionate about delivering high-impact research, innovative interdisciplinary programmes, and an exceptional student experience. A strategic thinker, with a high degree of integrity and excellent judgement, they will share our values and have the ability to engender a diverse, inclusive and respectful environment, and influence and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders.

Closing date: Tuesday 28th May at midnight.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is committed to being an equal opportunities employer. We embrace and value the diversity of our staff and student population and seek to promote equity, diversity and inclusion as essential elements in contribution to improving health worldwide. We believe that when people feel respected and included, they can be more creative, successful, and happier at work. While we have more work to do, we are committed to building an inclusive workplace, a community that everyone feels a part of, which is safe, respectful, supportive and enables all to reach their full potential.
