    The School of Energy Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) is seeking applications for the post of Lecturer in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture.

    ICIT is a multidisciplinary research and postgraduate teaching center based in Orkney.

    Orkney is recognized as a world leading location for research, innovation and demonstration in the fields of marine energy, marine planning and resource management.

    This post offers a unique and exciting opportunity to work with university colleagues, in Orkney, Edinburgh and Malaysia, as well as engaging with local business and stakeholder groups.

    This vacancy is an exciting opportunity for an early/mid-career academic in the field of fisheries and aquaculture. Specifically, duties of the post will involve teaching and research. Teaching will be primarily at post-graduate level Marine Science students. This includes supervision of MSc projects for both on campus and online students. This includes the supervision of PhD students and the publication of scientific papers.

    The post holder will build upon well-established relationships with local fishing organizations in Orkney, providing scientific advice to the local fishery.

    You will also join a large group of academics working in marine science across Heriot-Watt's campuses (Edinburgh, Dubai and Malaysia and Orkney).

    The postholder will be day-to-day based at the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) on Heriot-Watt University's Orkney Campus, however they will also be strongly encouraged to develop teaching and research collaborations with colleagues in Edinburgh, in particular those in the Lyell Centre and our international campuses in Malaysia and Dubai.

    This is a unique opportunity to work in a small multidisciplinary team, located at the heart of a flourishing island community which finds itself at the cutting edge of marine research and resource management.

    Teach in sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and environmental science, to an international group of postgraduate students, on-campus and online.

    ICIT is a specialist postgraduate teaching and research center which focuses on the management of coastal and island resources.

    The successful candidate should have a strong track record of research in fisheries management. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in inshore fisheries and aquaculture. fisheries-aquaculture interaction; or modelling of marine population connectivity.

    We also welcome applications from candidates with research interests in wider aspects of sustainability in fisheries including the challenge of meeting 'net zero carbon'.

    Candidates with a wider background in marine resource management are welcome to apply.

    The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary environment and will be expected to develop and deliver innovative teaching and research that fits well with the scope and remit of ICIT, and a wider team of marine specialists within Heriot-Watt.

    Heriot-Watt University is known for its research-informed course delivery and the global multi-campus education it provides. ICIT delivers postgraduate teaching to a multinational cohort of students.

    The post holder will be expected to deliver particularly (but not exclusively) postgraduate level courses in sustainable fisheries and environmental science.

    Experience or interest in blue growth, marine energy, marine planning, or net zero would be advantageous.

    It is essential that the candidate is comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team, across campuses and working in an online environment.

    The fishing industry, marine energy technology, oil and gas, marine conservation, aquaculture, and tourism all compete for sea space.

    Orkney has become a test bed for new forms of marine governance. ICIT forms part of a cluster of local businesses and stakeholder groups involved in marine research and consultancy. This includes the European Marine Energy Centre; community groups (e.g. Orkney Sustainable Fisheries); and local authority marine planners. The successful candidate must be prepared to engage with external organizations taking an active role in Orkney's maritime community.

    Candidates with experience of multi-institutional work or who can demonstrate participation in international research networks will be looked upon favorably.

    Heriot-Watt is a research-intensive university, with the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society achieving world-leading status in the UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.

    Ideally the candidate will have research experience to PhD level in fisheries science or fisheries governance.
    Applicants must have a good record of high-quality publications and possess excellent team working and communication skills.

    Previous teaching experience, a strong commitment to the student experience, and evidence of good practice in teaching delivery at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is highly desirable.

    Candidates falling outside these parameters will also be considered if they have relevant experience and knowledge.
    This is a permanent post subject to three-year probationary period, in accordance with University regulations.
    Based in Orkney for thirty years, ICIT is a multidisciplinary research and postgraduate teaching centre.

    Together with industry and 3rd sector partners ICIT will be launching the Island Centre for Net Zero (ICNZ) in 2023.

    The post is located in Orkney working from a purpose-built building on the Orkney Innovation and Research Campus in the town of Stromness.

    Identify sources of funding for research, then successfully win funding through submission of effective proposals and support production of proposals elsewhere within the School as appropriate.

    Regularly publish high impact research findings in recognised scientific and industry-leading journals; share findings at conferences and within the School.

    Recruit and supervise PhD students through to successful qualification and supervise MSc student projects.
    Learning and Teaching
    Undertake teaching duties in relation to courses appropriate to their area of expertise (e.g. through practical sessions, lectures, seminars, tutorials).
    Contribute to the continued development of postgraduate and undergraduate studies in consultation with the Director of Studies.

    Undertake scholarly activity related to the effective delivery of the curriculum and maintain the level of their subject expertise.

    Contribute to the monitoring of the quality of learning and teaching and to contribute to quality management and enhancement activities.

    Disseminate the development of good learning and teaching practice.
    Interact with staff across the university to develop the discipline.
    Academic Management and Administration

    Undertake administrative tasks associated with programme planning, preparation for examination and progression boards, course development teams etc; engage with the team and working with others to the benefit of the University.

    Contribute to the effective recruitment, admission and induction to the courses, ensuring compliance with the School and University targets.

    This will include involvement in School and University open days and interview processes.

    Devise income generating activities including assisting with raising sponsorship as well as other activities that will raise the profile of the School's programmes.

    Represent the School effectively in both the national and international context.
    PhD (or equivalent research experience) related to fisheries science or fisheries management.
    The ability to initiate research activity and deliver high quality research outcomes.
    Interest in teaching and demonstrable ability to engage in high quality teaching and student support.
    Interest to operate at the cross-disciplinary boundaries of ecology, natural resources, planning, engineering, economics.
    Relevant industrial experience
    Knowledge or experience in fisheries sustainability accreditation
    Experience of teaching in a higher education environment
    Experience in the use of numerical methods and data analysis in an environmental context.
