    Job description

    Overall purpose

    Responsible for supporting HoS in establishing, leading, enhancing, and growing the discipline of computing and the SoEC, ensuring that its programmes and academic delivery inspire, have impact and support the plans of the institution.

    To contribute to the overall success of the Computing Discipline and the SoEC by working closely with the HoS and the Senior Management Team to ensure that innovative programmes and courses are demand led and deliver to the needs of students across the organisation and the market.

    • Plan and manage the resources required to ensure that targets are met within the discipline area.
    • Lead on the development of innovative and appropriate curriculum development and design.
    • Lead and inspire staff in the discipline in terms of academic practice and scholarly activity and lead by example in academic enterprise and professional engagement.
    • Work collaboratively with other colleagues e.g., Deputy Head of School, PL'S and with all other teams on enhancement action planning, reviewing practice.

    Specific duties and responsibilities

    Key Responsibilities

    Within the identified curriculum area, under the overall direction of the Head of School:

    • To be a member of the School Management Team with responsibility for the planning and delivery of activities.
    • Lead the Programme Leaders and other academic staff to ensure the discipline forms an integral part of the school and Regent College and its students' progress while adhering to appropriate regulatory requirements (e.g., OFS)
    • Lead the academic and curriculum development for the discipline, identifying trends in student demand, anticipating emerging requirements and ensuring the promotion of employability, enterprise, and inclusion across programmes.
    • Ensure that the academic curriculum inspires and challenges our students, is fit for the future through innovative methods of delivery and meets the highest quality standards and the offer is ambitious and attractive.
    • Ensure that the discipline delivers outstanding learning, teaching and assessment practice, that embed the values and ambition of the school within its core delivery and that this is reflected in metrics and rankings such as TEF and NSS and other key performance indicators.
    • Take responsibility for all collaborative partnerships linked to the discipline.
    • Take responsibility for the quality assurance including lesson and tutorial observations, self-assessment reports and quality improvement plans.
    • Monitor performance targets (e.g. recruitment, retention and achievement targets for students) and taking action, as necessary, to address under performance.
    • Undertake teaching and learning activities. (Average of 6 hrs/wk except where agreed otherwise) within the identified curriculum area, under the overall direction of the Head of School:

    Curriculum Management and Responsibilities

    Curriculum Management and Delivery:

    • Ensure that the College's quality processes (including targets for the improvement in quality of teaching, learning and attainment) are embedded within the curriculum area and demonstrate their impact upon teaching, learning and attainment.
    • Manage and be accountable for sustained improvements in students' achievements within the area of responsibility and ensuring that the targets for students' recruitment, retention and achievement are achieved.
    • Analyse course performance data and ensuring that the staff team(s) are aware of course performance against national benchmarks.
    • Manage the appropriate stages of the student disciplinary process and conduct within the area of responsibility.
    • Co-ordinate and advise on the production of high quality course materials, including schemes of work, lesson plans, assessment schedules and learning materials.
    • Ensure the development and implementation of new curricula, including submissions to awarding bodies.
    • Ensure that College policies for the delivery of the curriculum, teaching and learning, including key/basic skills and work based learning are implemented fully within the curriculum area.
    • Ensure there is integrity within the moderation and verification of assessment processes to ensure meeting national (and College) standards.
    • Provide leadership and guidance for staff in the development of exemplar Pedagogic practice.
    • Keep abreast of curriculum research and developments within the curriculum area.

    Marketing and recruitment of students

    • To organise recruitment activities, in collaboration with the marketing and recruitment team, and ensure the appropriate advice and guidance is available for students.
    • To liaise with internal and external teams/organisations as directed by the Head of School, to ensure the effective and efficient recruitment and guidance of students.
    • To ensure staff attend promotional events and activities and contribute to the positive promotion of the curriculum area.
    • To regularly review and revise initial students' recruitment assessments, to ensure students are appropriately placed on programmes.

    Support for Students

    • To ensure the implementation of the College's Tutorial Policy, induction processes, ensuring effective use of students' support schemes.
    • To ensure the implementation of the various College policies designed to provide outstanding support and skills development for students.
    • To provide access to diagnostic assessment processes for students, to enable targeted support and skills development to be put in place.
    • To ensure that curriculum resources and learning materials are accessible to, and shared with, students.
    • To organise regular progress reviews for students, that are motivational and include target setting in order to support them achieve their potential.
    • To liaise with the Student Support Teams and other departments to ensure that students receive maximum benefit from the College's Student Support Services.

    Leadership and management

    • To prepare course and staff timetables as required.
    • To ensure the maximum use of accommodation and staffing resources.
    • To ensure that students and staff take pride in and responsibility for, the learning environment, including the tidiness, comfort and safety of accommodation within the remit of the college.
    • To be responsible for the management of staff within the curriculum area/
    • To support in inducting, supporting and developing staff including the support for part-time staff.
    • To be responsible for the booking of part-time lecturers as required and in line with college policies.
    • To act as Programme Team Leader for specific course areas, as appropriate.
    • To support the coordination and implementation of lesson observations and staff appraisals.
    • To assist in the development planning and the construction of the school's course portfolio.

    Resources

    • To plan, manage and ensure the effective deployment of the resource requirements for the services that are the responsibility of the role including financial human and physical resources.

    Additional duties:

    • Deputise for the HoS as required.
    • Contribute fully to the discipline and school management structure.
    • Develop and foster strong and appropriate links externally.
    • Contribute in a flexible and constructive manner to other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.
    • Undertake as appropriate some personal scholarship and research in a relevant field of endeavor.
    • Occasional evening and weekend working.
    • Overseas / overnight business travel as and when required.

    Person Specification

    EXPERIENCE & PERSONAL QUALITIES

    Essential:

    • Significant management experience in an HE institution of a similar or larger size.
    • Successful experience of using effective leadership and management competencies to create a high performing team.
    • Knowledge and utilisation of quality assurance and enhancement policies and procedures.
    • Extensive teaching experience in HE and a good understanding of the HE sectors and current issues.
    • A commitment to live and promote the College core values.
    • Successful development of international collaborations, recruitment of international students and internationalisation of the curriculum.
    • Experience of successful inter-disciplinary developments.

    Desirable:

    • Experience of undertaking successful bids for external funding

    EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Essential:

    • Educated to postgraduate level and hold a teaching qualification.
    • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
    • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) with aim of achieving Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy within 3 years of commencement date in post (if not already SF-HEA).

    Desirable:

    • Hold a PhD/EdD in an academic discipline relevant to the school.
    • Relevant professional qualification/ membership of a professional body where appropriate for the school.
