    Job summary

    We have an exciting opportunity in the Central Locality within our Neuro-disability pathway for a Speech and Language Therapist with experience in Social Communication and Multi-Disciplinary Diagnostic pathways. This role will cover the Child Development Centres of both Crawley and Haywards Heath.

    We are looking for an engaging, well-organised, self-motivated individual with established clinical skills and experience in the above specialist area to join us. The ideal applicant will ideally be able to evidence clinical experience in school-age and pre school ASD assessment and diagnosis. The ideal candidate will have a specialist interest and significant experience in working with children with ASD and complex needs. They will also be able to work and contribute to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) as part of the ASD pathway writing complex clinical reports based on assessment findings. They will have knowledge and skills suitable to be able to contribute to projects, data collection and strategic developments as part of work undertaken to transform the Social Communication Pathway (NDP). Experience of providing supervision and leadership within a small team would be desirable.

    Main duties of the job

    As a Highly Specialist SLT you will be part of the multi disciplinary diagnostic team for the social communication pathway carrying out assessments and observations as part of a child's diagnostic journey. You will also provide second opinions to colleagues in the wider team. You will undertake staff supervision and when required and provide expert clinical advice alongside the Professional Lead for SLT as part of the SEND Tribunals process.

    As Band 7 therapists the roles requires a high level of clinical competence combined with the ability to work closely with multi-disciplinary colleagues and SALT Clinical Service Managers to develop and optimise the service. As part of the wider Trust (Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust covers West Sussex, Brighton and Hove) there is a network of Band 7s working in similar roles with whom there are established links for supervision, support and to ensure equity of access to C-SALT services across the area.

    Job responsibilities

    To provide assessment and diagnosis and management to children.

    To provide advice to other professionals and parents in order to support the needs of children with speech, language and communication delay and disorder in the specialist area of social communication difficulties.

    To organise caseloads within the scope of the highly specialist post advising the SLT Service Manager of shortfalls and difficulties as they arise.

    To negotiate with parents, carers and others Multi-Disciplinary team members around individual case management, demonstrating compassion and empathy alongside well developed negotiation skills and management of conflict.

    To be responsible for administration and record keeping conforming to Departmental and Trust regulations concerning the format and security of patient records and the Data Protection Act.

    To be aware of, and adhere to, legal requirements relating to the provision of a Speech and Language Therapy Service and of procedures relating to Child Protection.

    To recognise own professional boundaries and seek advice and support as appropriate.

    To lead in the development of innovative practices and projects in specialist area in collaboration with SLT Service Manager

    To participate in the development of Team and Service clinical policies and plans as directed by SLT Service Manager.

    To provide timely and accurate statistics as required by the Department. To provide appropriate and timely reports and other client related correspondence, according to service standards and requirements of other agencies.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Degree / Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • A masters level qualification or equivalent knowledge and skills demonstrated through wide range of paediatric experience and training
  • Desirable

  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Wide ranging paediatric SLT experience including at least 3 years as a Specialist SLT (normally band 6 or above)
  • Assessment, diagnosis and independent management of a wide range of paediatric caseload
  • Experience working within a Social Communication Diagnostic pathway
  • Clinical supervision of students, support staff and assistants
  • Knowledge and Skills

    Essential

  • Extensive knowledge of assessments and therapy techniques and of different models and frameworks of working
  • In-depth knowledge of issues relating to differential diagnosis and aetiology in a range of language and communication difficulties
  • Working knowledge of government policies, including Education systems, NICE Guidelines and National Service Framework for Children
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Competent IT skills
  • Car owner/driver or suitable alternative
