    The Opportunity

    Key responsibilities:

  • Develop strong relationships with the partners, legal professionals in the Cyber practice, to ensure design and delivery of business plans for the UK and the West more broadly, that drive sustained profitable growth and enhance our profile across our chosen markets.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the Cyber practice, relevant client issues, and the wider disputes practice and the firm as a whole. Lead business development activity, aligned to the strategic priorities of the Cyber practice in the West.
  • Develop scalable product propositions that maximise revenue and profitability, creating relationship opportunities in priority sectors (financial services, TMT, energy, aviation, consumer, infrastructure, pharma/life sciences, professional services).
  • Grow key client relationships across offices and practice areas, aligned to the Cyber business plan. Identify and co-ordinate cross-selling opportunities with other practice areas, sector specialists and relationship partners and encourage partners to win work in teams.
  • Ensure connectivity and continuous improvement in business development activity amongst the associate cohort. Contribute to and deliver structured business development training to legal professionals, at all levels.
  • Pitches, proposals and capability statements:

  • Liaise with partners, associates and BD colleagues across the global network on drafting significant practice and firm-wide pitches for Cyber
  • Provide appropriate levels of input into tender responses and pitches, including drafting material and obtaining input from various contributors or identifying resource / guiding fee earners to do this, as appropriate on a case by case basis
  • Develop strong and consistent key selling messages
  • Participate in/assist with the rehearsal of the pitch team
  • Manage relevant communications including the debrief process internally and externally
  • Reputation enhancement, brand & profile:

  • Project manage the development of marketing collateral with design and production team, including collateral relevant to target markets
  • Provide guidance and marketing/ BD execution on new product launches
  • Ensure the timely and effective production of legal directories and award submissions for the practice working with fee earners at all levels
  • Liaise with the PR /communications team on all media and PR opportunities for practice
  • Liaise with fee earners, PSLs and knowledge management on articles for external publications and on content for client materials
  • Management of projects, people, information and budgets:

  • Delegate to and guide BD and other colleagues in other teams collaborating on BD initiatives
  • Pro-actively work with the pricing team and partners and associates to develop innovative pricing proposals for the Cyber practice
  • Manage the content and development of various BD databases with appropriate levels of junior resource
  • Contribute ideas to improving processes and systems within the team and take responsibility for such projects,
  • Act as the Cyber profile manager / super user for the firm's global credentials project
  • Support production and development of internal and external newsletters and bulletins as necessary, in liaison with the PSL team
  • Provide advice regarding choice of events, invitations and programmes
  • Facilitate budgeting for specific events/campaigns and ensure suggested BD activities reflect best return on investment for the practice
  • Analyse outcomes against costs and recommend changes as appropriate.
  • Work with global BD colleagues and provide support and guidance on BD activities relevant to the practice
  • Develop – and lead, as appropriate – a BD network to support the activities of the Cyber team across the UK and EMEA.
  • Key internal relationships:

  • Global Practice Area Lead Cyber (GPAL West), Partners/Legal Professionals, Head of BD Disputes and the wider global BD leadership, Legal Operations and Brand & Marketing teams
  • Key external relationships:

  • Any third-party partner organisations across UK and EMEA in respect of directories, conferences, PR and events.
  • Key Performance Indicators:

  • Positive feedback from key stakeholders
  • Demonstratable improvements around key metrics including opportunity generation, revenue, profitability
  • Campaign specific measures
  • External client listening
  • Efficient management of conflict/issues relating to partners
  • Successful implementation of deliverables
  • Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Appropriate post graduate qualification.
  • Experience and understanding of Cyber and Disputes
  • Significant knowledge and expertise in business development/sales/account relationship management within professional services.
  • Knowledge of customer relationship management principles and practices in a service delivery environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in building strategic relationships, managing clients and pursuing new business.
  • Proven experience leading a high performing team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Able to confidently get message across to senior audiences, presents with clarity, energy, confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Able to make complex decisions to ensure the firm objectives are met and develops new, innovative concepts or original approaches without guidance from others.
