    The role – what's involved?

    We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic professional for the role of Environmental Laboratory Supervisor to join our Environmental team, to help lead and oversee the environmental processing at our new premises.

    You will be supervising those working in and around the environmental laboratory and assist with the processing of palaeoenvironmental soil samples. This opportunity would offer the chance to work on some of the most exciting archaeological projects in the country, including large-scale infrastructure projects.

    The role comprises (but is not limited to) the supervision of other members of staff and ensuring that the right methodologies are adhered to. You will be responsible for the timely delivery of the environmental processing output and assist with the wet and dry processing of environmental soil samples for the retrieval of macrofossils, archaeological artefacts and human remains. You will use your organisational skills to keep accurate records and will be required to liaise with other members of the Wessex Archaeology team to ensure an efficient workflow. You will be responsible for the smooth running of the environmental laboratories, and contribute to a positive, safe, and inclusive work environment. The successful candidate would be an organized individual, capable of working independently and as part of the team.

    This role would involve repetitive manual tasks and demand daily manual handling. Working indoors and outdoors would both be required. The role is offered on a permanent, full-time basis.

    Main responsibilities will include:

    • Supervising other members of staff
    • Organising workload for the environmental processing team
    • Ensuring the correct methods are adhered to and ensuring all processing work is of a high standard
    • Overseeing maintenance of the environmental processing equipment in liaison with other stakeholders
    • Processing environmental soil samples
    • Accurate record keeping relating to processing workload
    • Assisting with logistical tasks
    • Experience in environmental processing and/or post-excavation work
