    The Role:

    The role is for a band 7 Critical Care Speech and Language Therapy Lead working for Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a national centre of excellence for cardio-thoracic medicine and surgical care. It is also a national centre for cardio-thoracic transplantation. You will be working within a dynamic multi-disciplinary team to help implement the highest quality of care provision. Instrumental assessments are a key part of care provision and are carried on patients with complex needs. The role will involve leading in the service development and auditing of Speech and Language Therapy provision in critical care and cardiac surgery.

    Main duties of the job

    Within the team, we encourage innovative thinking toward service development from all members of the team. You will have the opportunity to gain leadership skills and be encouraged to present at a national and international conferences. You will be supported in publication and research that builds on the excellent speech and language therapy provision at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

  • Degree Speech and Language Therapy
  • Current State Registration with HCPC
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Good presentation skills in both verbal and written form.
  • Good organisational skills including prioritisation.
  • Ability to analyse issues and problem solve.
  • Ability to negotiate with and influence people.
  • Highly developed hearing, concentration and perceptual skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to liaise with professionals at all levels eg discuss complex patient cases
  • Presentation skills
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team
  • Legible written communication
  • Tracheostomy competencies completed
  • Current acute experience with an adult caseload relevant to the post.
  • Management of a complex dysphagia caseload.
  • Knowledge of relevant swallowing and communication assessment tools and therapy approaches
  • Knowledge of professional standards including record keeping.
  • An understanding of the roles of other professionals in acute, rehabilitation and community settings.
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to adults.
  • Knowledge of research and audit systems.
  • An understanding of the principles of clinical governance.
  • High level of interpersonal communication skills including observation, listening, empathy and sensitivity.
  • Ability to manage the emotional consequences of working with patients with distressing conditions.
  • Ability to analyse, reflect on and develop own performance.
