    Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Head of Research Development.

    In this role you will lead and develop the research support and development function at Historic England, realising the organisation's ambition to grow not only its research excellence, impact and knowledge exchange activities but also its research income through the development pipeline of high-quality research and innovation funding applications and an efficient grant management service.

    developing the policies and procedures required for research management, integrity and compliance; working with staff across the Historic England Groups to develop a thriving research community; championing and communicating research both internally and externally; and helping to shape the research strategy of the organisation.

    You will act as a public advocate for heritage research (both within Historic England and also more widely) and the positive part it plays in developing understanding and appreciation of the historic environment.

    You will be responsible for the further development and promotion of Historic England's research strategy and agenda and will act as the key point of liaison with UK Research Councils or other potential sponsors of research.

    You will ensure that there is a clear overview and prioritisation for research activity within Historic England and focus particularly on ensuring that the research activity generated by the regional teams and research staff in other groups sits within an agreed organisation-wide research framework congruent with the corporate plan priorities.

    You will work closely with the Corporate Leadership Team to ensure that national and regional heritage research is properly co-ordinated and of a consistently high standard that responds to Historic England's Research Governance Framework.

    As Head of the Research Development Team, to manage and motivate team members, role modelling the Historic England behaviours and developing the team culture and skills required to deliver the research ambitions of the organisation.

    To provide leadership and strategic direction for Historic England's research relationship with the higher education sector, the UK Research Councils, other national and international research institutions and Historic England's role as an IRO and as a Public Sector Research Establishment.

    To act as the champion for Historic England's research expertise and owner of an external research engagement strategy that guides research towards real-world impact, addressing societal challenges and contributing to sector development.

    To act as a strong advocate for the importance of research in better understanding and enjoying the historic environment, representing the organisation, and the heritage sector in appropriate circumstances.

    To develop and improve the policies and procedures required for research management, integrity and compliance (including working with Analytics colleagues on data collection, storage and sharing) and ensure their implementation.

    To ensure (a) that our own research programme is visible and remains explicitly connected to our corporate objectives; (b) that our external-facing research strategy and agenda are kept up to date, and effectively promoted to attract investment; and (c) that cross-organisation consistency is maintained in areas of research ethics, career support and recognition.

    To foster a collaborative and productive research environment, identifying skills gaps and developing peer-group support structures and training opportunities for staff undertaking research.

    To maintain and improve close working relations with relevant research-related partners within the academic, government and public sectors so that they are well-informed and persuaded of the importance of a positive, forward-looking heritage research strategy.

    To ensure that relevant government and other national research-related consultations are responded to, and to ensure that official data on our R&D functions as requested by ONS are provided annually.

    As a manager, ensure our legal obligations and the expectations set out in our policies are met, including health & safety, equality & diversity, finance, procurement, information security and managing people.

    Where necessary, working flexibly to cover relevant work in the Policy and Evidence Group in response to changing organisational priorities.

    A high-standard academic and/or professional qualification or equivalent experience relevant to historic environment research.

    Demonstrable understanding of research methods and processes coupled with a personal track record of successful research in a heritage subject.

    Significant experience of successful strategic research dissemination and advocacy work.
    An excellent understanding of how government and relevant national research institutions function and how they are best influenced.
