    Description
    The maternity service at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is evolving.

    We are looking for a passionate senior midwife who responds well to change and has experience of working in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating effective leadership and support skills for staff at all levels.

    The role will be to provide clinical leadership, facilitate professional development, and have continuing overall responsibility for the management and coordination of the antenatal and postnatal ward.

    STAFF CAR PARKING


    Staff Car Parking on the West Suffolk Hospital Site is eligible for individuals working outside of the core hours, 07:00 - 18:30.


    For individuals working within the core hours, the Trust offers parking off site at the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which is serviced by a regular shuttle bus to and from the Hospital.

    Details of the bus timetable can be found in the on-line starter pack on the West Suffolk Hospital website.

    This parking restriction does not apply if an individual is required to work on a weekend or if they are required to complete on call duties within their role

    The West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds provides acute and secondary care services (emergency department, maternity and neonatal services, day surgery unit, eye treatment centre, Macmillan unit and children's ward).

    It has 500+ beds and is a partner teaching hospital of the University of Cambridge.


    Adult and paediatric community services, provided in collaboration with West Suffolk Alliance partners, include a range of nursing, therapy, specialist, and ongoing temporary care and rehabilitation, some at our Newmarket Community Hospital.

    The Trust will give you reasonable notice, where possible, of temporary changes to your days or hours of work and will consult with you and/or your staff representatives about substantial permanent changes, but ultimately, these are changes which may be required of you.


    The post holder will provide clinical leadership, facilitate professional development, and carry continuing overall responsibility for the management and co-ordination of the antenatal and postnatal ward Ward F11.

    Lead and manage the ward and team to deliver best practice services to women and their babies.

    ~ Manage the resources effectively, including the team members and the quality standards.

    ~ Liaise with all health professionals and support staff to ensure patients receive the best services possible.

    ~ To ensure compliance with national and local standards for care, report on this and initiate and carry through action plans
    To participate in the formal investigation of complaints and incidents associated with the ward, with the support of line manager if required

    Be responsible for appraisals of an allocated number of midwives and support staff through the personal review process, monitoring and developing performance.

    Regularly monitor the sickness and absence of staff and provide informal and formal counselling as per trust policy.
    Ensure timely completion of duty rotas which ensure appropriate 24-hour cover of the establishment.

    To be fully informed of the risk management strategy, be responsible for reporting incidents, risk assessment and development of action plans to reduce risk and complaints.


    ~ Demonstrate clear lines of communication with colleagues, managers, matrons, risk manager and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
    Participate in complaints procedures as requested in relation to adverse outcomes. Report complaints and untoward incidents to the midwifery managers, investigate as necessary and be proactive in preventing further incidents.
    Build and develop on existing communication with external stakeholders including Maternity and Neonatal Voice Partnership (MNVP) and the Local Maternity & Neonatal System
    Present findings of ongoing audit and education development sessions

    Present and use audit meetings as a forum for improvements in standards and patient care as per Trusts policy.

    Promote team building and maintain cohesion within clinical areas to establish a positive working environment and promote and support autonomous practice.


    ~ Planning and organisational Skills:

    Completion of the duty rota, ensuring appropriate cover and supporting other ward managers if required
    Co-ordinate team representation at clinical audit and professional meetings within the hospital and community setting.

    Be responsible for the operational management of personnel issues such as management of sickness absence, including interviewing staff following each episode of absence, and take appropriate action in line with Trust policy.

    Encourage and promote continual quality improvement and implementation of evidence-based practice, where necessary facilitating and managing change.

    Network with professional colleagues within the directorate and throughout the Trust to ensure best practice is shared and improvements to patient care are made.

    In conjunction with the Senior Midwifery Matron for Inpatients, monitor patient/user satisfaction and investigate complaints and incidents in a proactive manner, ensuring appropriate action is taken to address issues raised through a positive learning culture.

    Supervise, monitor and advise on programmes of care and facilitate optimum standards of care ensuring continuous development of woman-centred, evidence-based practice.

    In conjunction with the Named Midwife for Safeguarding, recognise, assess, plan and implement safeguarding guidelines as the need arises, ensuring that vulnerable women and children are protected wherever possible.

    Work with the Perinatal Mental Health Team to develop and support individualised care plans for women.

    ~ Be proactive in conducting audit and participate in the development, monitoring and audit of standards of care.
    Be innovative in introducing quality approach to service provision by setting, implementing, monitoring and evaluating standards of care.
    Ensure a safe clinical environment for women babies and families, considering the Trusts health and safety policies.
    Understand the risk management processes in the trust and service.
    Demonstrate awareness and compliance with risk management policy.
    Demonstrate responsibility in ensuring key recommendations from risk incidents are effectively implemented.

    To lead in the implementation of changes to clinical practice in response to evidence-based practice of care or the changing needs of women.

    Lead and participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of care, including guideline development and audit.

    ~ Appropriate use of resources to minimise the risk from potentially harmful substances using trusts infection prevention measures.
