    Managing Director, Ben Williams's September Industry Update

    As the change in weather brings winter closer, we're reminded of the continued instability in raw material pricing, one of the many consequences of the ongoing and devastating conflict in Ukraine.

    During a month in which energy prices are still fluctuating, further global disruption has been caused after a technical fault and strike action in Australia reduced liquefied natural gas (LNG) output by one-fifth.

    A turbine tripped at the Wheatstone LNG plant in Western Australia, whilst simultaneously, 500 union member employees escalated strike action over pay and conditions.

    Although full production has now reportedly resumed, gas prices spiked at the time and the situation impacted between 5% and 7% of global LNG supply.

    With warnings of further strike disruptions to come, we must again prepare to conduct business operations and logistics with the potential challenge of increased fuel prices to contend with.

    More positively, it was good to see inflation finally start to stabilise in September; and interestingly, the Government give industry more time to transfer to electrification in road transport.

    Hopefully this will offer businesses additional opportunity to adjust and plan their commercial vehicle strategies and supporting infrastructure to meet Net Zero goals.

    Success at EFEE

    To business development news, and this month we were pleased to actively participate in this year's EFEE World Conference on Explosives and Blasting, details of which are covered in this month's Onsite.

    Held at the Royal Dublin Society, this was the federation's 12th international blasting event, attracting industry professionals from around the world.

    I was once again proud to place my team in front of an international audience.
    The exceptional work produced by our own Dr. Rob Farnfield was highlighted through his presented paper on the testing regime and electronic initiation.

    This was one of the event's best attended presentations, illustrating how EPC-UK's knowledge and feedback is valued by the industry as we set the stage to advance our discussions with suppliers.

    I'm pleased to report that Rob's work further continues as he looks to develop the next generation of electronic initiation for the UK market.

    As an event participant, it was also great to see the Institute of Quarrying officially launch its revised Explosives in Quarrying book at EFEE this year, as well as the industry anticipated blasting diploma, both of which EPC-UK has worked collaboratively to realise.

    Also, in local EPC-UK news, we thoroughly enjoyed our annual Charity Golf Day this September, a calendar event that has now become an industry tradition.

    We had a great time as always and I want to thank everyone involved for helping us raise £5,000 to benefit both our Defibrillator Cause and the Institute of Quarrying Benevolent Fund.

    Next year will mark our Golf Day's tenth anniversary, and in a fresh and exciting move we'll be picking up play in a new location on 5th September 2024 — the Wychwood Park Hotel and Golf Club in Cheshire.

    With different sponsorship opportunities and a goal to make even more money than ever, it'll be a date to put in your diary and we hope you'll be able to join us.

    Back to the present, and September's edition of the EPC-UK Onsite magazine is now live.

    It features coverage on our increasing involvement in supporting sustainable energy infrastructure schemes and our company's successful transition to the Sage X3 enterprise management solution, demonstrating that more progress than ever is being made to deliver on greener industry ambitions.

    In a couple of months, we'll be releasing our sustainability issue of Onsite, sharing our forward-thinking approach to creating industry change for the future.
