    Job summary

    As a Functional Skills Teacher, you will be a member of the Apprenticeships and Early Careers Team within the Staff Development Department at North Bristol NHS Trust, based at Southmead Hospital's Learning & Research Centre.

    You will be responsible for teaching groups of learners who will be studying towards Functional Skills qualifications at level 1 and level 2 as part of wider study programmes, including Apprenticeships. Teaching will often be delivered in a group classroom environment but there may be occasions where small group or one-to-one tuition may be required, depending on the needs of the learner(s).

    You will also be responsible for the design, evaluation and creation of the curriculum for your subject specialist area with support from the Functional Skills Manager.

    The role requires working collaboratively and co-operatively with others to help develop a workforce with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to deliver safe and effective patient care and to enhance the quality-of-service delivery within North Bristol NHS Trust.

    You will work alongside teachers and tutors in other subject areas, supporting all stages of the learning journey from initial assessment to achievement.

  • Ad-hoc revision or 1:1 learner support as required and where there is capactiy
  • Effective liaison and co-ordination with learners, managers, and other members of the team to optimise opportunities for learning in the workplace and classroom.
  • Plan and deliver teaching, and assessments to learners in their area of responsibility.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed to the required standards of the awarding body and Apprenticeship Centre.
  • Provide support where required to other members of the teaching team needing to complete documentation as part of the learner's journey.
  • Identify learners who are failing to meet targets and initiate action plans to address any issues which may affect the timely completion of qualifications and a awards.
  • Provide regular updates on learners' progress to managers.
  • Report any concerns to managers, identifying and escalating those issues that may be outside their area of responsibility.

    Person Specification

    Education/Traning Qualifications

    Essential

  • Degree, or equivalent experience, in subject specialist area (English)
  • Minimum grade C/4 in Maths and English (or equivalent qualification)
  • Qualification in teaching ( PGCE, CertEd, CELTA), or equivalent experience
  • Desirable

  • Qualification in Special Educational Needs teaching
  • Qualification in ICT at min. Level 2 ( Functional Skills, NVQ or equivalent)
  • Qualification in Teaching ESOL
  • Prior Experience

    Essential

  • Experience working in an education setting
  • Recent Experience of teaching
  • Evidence of supporting learners to achieve academic goals
  • Evidence of designing educational curricula
  • Desirable

  • Experience working in FE, Apprenticeships or Vocational / Work-based learning
  • Evidence of designing 1-1 intervention programs to meet varying learners' needs
  • Experience delivering teaching to ESOL students
  • Experience of teaching maths (up to level 2)
  • Experience of teaching ICT (up to level 2)
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain relationships
  • Ability to engage with reluctant learners
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in teaching and subject specialist areas
  • Confidence working with groups and individuals
  • Knowledge of study skills and a wide variety of teaching/coaching techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of barriers to learning
  • Ability to work with a wide range of IT packages, especially MS Office
  • Strong record-keeping skills
  • Knowledge of own responsibilities under Prevent duty, Safeguarding and Keeping Children Safe in Education
